Understanding Color: Creative Techniques in Watercolor

Overview

The inspiration for Marcia Moses’ illuminating guide came from the many questions colleagues and students have asked her through the years—and she has made absolutely certain that the techniques outlined in her easy-to-follow discussions offer the practical applications they want. Even artists with a thorough grasp of design and technique don’t always fully understand color’s properties. But without this knowledge they’ll get lost as they work. These issues are all explored, along with information on setting up ...

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
PRAISE FOR EASY WATERCOLOR—one of Booklist’s Top Ten Craft and Hobby Books:
“Beginners eager to try their hand should take Moses as their tutor. She sensitively guides readers through a complete starter course...beautifully designed. An excellent place to start.”—Booklist
Library Journal

In this personal, breezy exploration of the properties of color as used in watercolors, longtime instructor and author Moses gives readers a foundation in color theory and the psychological effects of color. The text focuses on pigment choices and ways to maximize those choices in simple watercolor paintings. Examples from the artist's work and that of four other contemporary artists fill out the work. While Moses is an enthusiastic guide, Caroline Jasper's Powercolor: Master Color Concepts for All Media covers the same material more comprehensively.

    A Gold Medal Winner

A good sense of color is very important to creating a good painting. This book is very informative on the properties and science of color. The pictures included are great to view and the history and science included would be very helpful to any art student for research purposes. I was especially fond of the portrait of Dave Wottle winning the gold medal in the 1972 Olympics. The colors used created the mood and showed the effort involved. I prefer watercolor to oil because of the price of oil. After reading this book, I was motivated to start painting again after a long dry spell.

ENTER FROM THE DARKNESS TO LIGHT

Although I must reread the entire book, I'm so am delighted that I spent a few dollars for a book that has literally opened my eyes. I have wasted so much time in the past trying to cope with color and how it applies to my or any painting. A definite 5 star!
