I was introduced to this author just like many of you might be, browsing killing time in barnes and Noble, I am an amateuer photgrapher, and after I received my D40 for Christmas this last year, I was hooked and wanted to know all about photography, so I began trying to figure out the whats what and the whose who, and really had no "schooling " in the art, and didn't have time to take formal classes, then enters " UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY" by Bryan Peterson. What a detail, yet simplitic comprehensive book, that teaches you techique, basics, and gives you great hope that you will be able to create the same quality pictures as he describes. He immerses you in th world of photography, giving you a new vision, and understanding of a very simple art form that can give immediate results, even from your first snap of the camera. His techiques are so informative, and he explains it pretty clear, however there are some hairied moments, that for those who have NEVER taken a picture, might have to rearead a couple times, but very rarely. Bryan has great illistrations of his work using the very techiques he describes, including the shutter speed, exposure, and what lens he used, and basically how he got the end result of the picture. This book is a great for any one's library, and really helpful to the professional that might need a new perspective, or a newbie needing guidance into the world of photography. Definately recommend UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY. matter fact any other books from Bryan Peterson, I have them all!

Digital cameras of all ¿colors and strips¿ exist today and it has never been easier for anyone to pick up a camera and take pictures, lots of pictures. In fact, without having to worry about the cost of film, it¿s even easier. One of the joys of digital photography is that we can literally take as many pictures as we want and most people do just that. Unfortunately, though, the new technology doesn¿t necessarily make it easier for the photographer to take consistent compelling pictures that are well exposed, but Bryan Peterson¿s new Amphoto volume, ¿Understanding Digital Photography,¿ will. Peterson takes you through the world of digital photography beginning with some definitions and basics and rambling through aperture, shutter speed, light, composition, and the digital darkroom. He covers every important aspect of these factors from a digital point of view, with the emphasis placed on helping readers to ¿see¿ and ¿avoid the most common pitfalls¿ that prevent us from taking great pictures. Peterson not only teaches us how to ¿see,¿ he teaches us what we ¿don¿t see¿ and how these failures impact on our art. The volume is full of Peterson¿s wonderful photos, which illustrate each topic of discussion, and he gives a full description of how each was composed and exposed. These are lessons in and of themselves, but you will also appreciate Peterson¿s ability to make difficult concepts easy to understand and enjoy his hearty sense of humor. Tips are littered throughout the book, as are suggestions for trying out some of the techniques on your own. There is something here for all levels of photographers and Peterson¿s refreshing attitude towards ¿getting it right in the camera¿ before moving on to your computerized darkroom will endear many. There is a time and place for everything and he¿ll show you how to put the computer in its place so that you¿ll have more time to shoot. Bryan Peterson is not only a gifted photographer, but is also a sensational educator. You¿ll love reading this book and you¿ll become a better photographer, too.

This is definitely a good book for beginners, and one that I would HIGHLY recommend. I have read a lot of books on photography (more than i should - I need to get out and shoot more), so most of the information in here was information that I have already learned or read elsewhere. I love Bryan's writing style though - very simple and easy to understand. If you ever have the chance to take one of his workshops, I would VERY HIGHLY recommend that!

Got this for my daughter who is just getting interested in digital photography. She enjoyed the book and learned several useful things from it but if you're looking for a book with the latest & greatest on digital photography, this probably isn't it. Get one that was written in the past year or two.

Bryan Peterson again shows why he is a recognized leader in digital photography. His book offers great insight in clear and concise language. His book is filled with excellent visual examples with annotated camera settings for each. As a beginning photographer, I absolutely recommend any of Mr. Peterson's books.
