Meet the Author

Richard West is the director of the Washington, D.C. Internship Program at Emerson College in Boston, where he was formerly a professor in the department of Communication Studies. He has served as both Department Chairperson and Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences at University of Southern Maine. West received his B.A. from Illinois State University (ISU) in Speech Communication Education and his M.A from ISU in Communication Studies. His Ph.D. is from Ohio University (OU) in Interpersonal Communication. West's research interests span several areas, including communication in the contemporary family; culture, identity and human relationships and instructional communication. West is author of over forty books, book chapters, and articles, most of which have been co-authored with his close friend/colleague, Lynn H. Turner. He recently served as President of the National Communication Association (NCA), was Director of the Educational Policies Board of the NCA, and is past Chair of the Instructional Communication Divisions for both Eastern Communication Association (ECA) and NCA. He serves on the editorial board of Communication Monographs, Journal of Family Communication, Communication Quarterly, Communication Teacher, Communication Research Reports, Qualitative Research Reports in Communication To learn more about Dr. West, please visit: http://www.richardlwest.com/.

Lynn H. Turner is a Professor in Communication Studies at Marquette University and former chair of the department of Communication Studies. She is past president of the National Communication Association. Lynn received her B.A from University of Illinois, her M.A. from University of Iowa and her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. At Marquette she currently teaches interpersonal communication at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, among other courses. Her research areas of emphasis include interpersonal, gender, and family communication. She is the co-author or co-editor of over 10 books as well as many articles and book chapters. Her articles have appeared in many journals including: Management Communication Quarterly, Journal of Applied Communication Research, Women and Language, and Western Journal of Communication. Her books include: From the Margins to the Center: Contemporary Women and Political Communication (co-authored with Patricia Sullivan; Praeger, 1996; recipient of the 1997 Best Book Award from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender [OSCLG]), Gender in Applied Communication Contexts (co-edited with Patrice Buzzanell and Helen Sterk; Sage, 2004), Introducing Communication Theory (2003) and Perspectives on Family Communication (2002) and The Sage Handbook of Family Communication (2015) (all co-authored with Richard West.).
