Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview of how healthcare professionals can collaboratively work in a team environment. Due to the great deal of medical care being delivered by teams, understanding the how and why teams are formed is very important. The authors provide sufficient background, examples, and tools for those in healthcare to be able to incorporate this information into their daily practices.
Audience: Although this is intended as an introductory book for students in public health, medicine, pharmacy, and allied health, it can serve as a great source of information for patients as well. Patients should understand that they, too, are part of the team that determines their care and should make themselves familiar with how teams in healthcare organizations operate. The authors have extensive experience, spanning the fields of medicine, public health, academia, and public policy.
Features: The book is structured with clearly labeled sections and contains tables and figures throughout to aid in the visualization of important topics. The authors start by describing the different types of teams common in the healthcare environment. They then move into describing the roles each team member plays and how each one's representation is important for the overall productivity of the team. The book then describes ways teams become effective by leading, making decisions, and managing conflict. Surprisingly, the description of how to lead and make decisions in healthcare teams comes before the discussion of the process of building a healthcare team. I would have expected these topics to be presented in the reverse order.
Assessment: This is a much-needed addition to the training curriculum of anyone involved in the healthcare industry. Teams have become an important component in patient care and everyone within each team must understand each other's roles.
