Understanding the Risks of Diet Drugs

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-This clearly written series entry presents information on body image and eating disorders, diet drugs and products, and healthy alternatives. The chapters on eating-disorder support groups, including how to start one, are especially well presented. Scenarios of teens' experiences are used to capture readers' interest and aid in understanding the issues explained. This hopeful and supportive title presents more information and is for an older audience than CeCe Barrett's The Dangers of Diet Drugs and Other Weight-Loss Products, which is attractively illustrated with photographs. Judy Monroe's Understanding Weight-Loss Programs and Debbie Stanley's Understanding Bulimia Nervosa (all Rosen, 1999) have a similar scope for the same age range, and the information can be repetitive. For collections that don't have those books, this one will be useful for students coping with their own or their friends' issues and could also be used for reports.-Debbie Stewart, Grand Rapids Public Library, MI Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
