Children's Literature - Cheryl Williams Chang
This is one of six books in the "Stars of Pro Wrestling" series highlighting the life of pro wrestlers. Mark Calaway, born in 1965, was one of five brothers. He was the youngest child, but he ended up being the largest of his siblings. In college, Mark Calaway was playing basketball and football when he discovered wrestling. With one year remaining in college, Mark dropped out to pursue professional wrestling. This 6'-8" man weighing 328 pounds began wrestling in small venues, slowly winning his way to better opportunities. In 1990, Mark was hired by the World Wrestling Federation where his wrestling name, Undertaker, was created. As Undertaker, he wore a wide-brimmed hat and a long, dark coat. When he entered the wrestling ring, eerie, haunting music would follow him. He had an angry, serious demeanor. Undertaker has had a hugely successful career and is recognized wherever he goes. This non-fiction book offers brightly colored pages, filled with photos of Undertaker wrestling opponents. This book is a bit dark for young children, and girls may not find it interesting. However, boys will most likely find this read quite entertaining. The book includes a table of contents, a glossary, an index, and a reference page leading to further readings about wrestlers mentioned in the book. An elementary school library is the best place to find this book. Reviewer: Cheryl Williams Chang

Gr 3-6-Filled with graphics, bright colors, large photographs, and bold fonts, these titles focus on action inside the ring and provide only the briefest of personal information about the subjects. Through play-by-play action depicted over the course of several pages, various wrestling moves and story lines among the wrestlers are described. Nowhere in this series is the scripted nature of professional wrestling mentioned, and readers will be left with the impression that the action is spontaneous. Fans will enjoy perusing these titles, but those looking for depth or insider information about the sport won't find it here.
