Overview

The exuberant, exhilarating photographs of dogs underwater that have become a sensation

From the water's surface, it's a simple exercise: a dog's leap, a splash, and then a wet head surfacing with a ball, triumphant.

But beneath the water is a chaotic ballet of bared teeth and bubbles, paddling paws, fur and ears billowing in the currents. From leaping Lab to diving Dachshund, the water is where a dog's distinct personality shines through; some...

From leaping Lab to diving Dachshund, the water is where a dog's distinct personality shines through; some lounge in the current, paddling slowly, but others arch their bodies to cut through the water with the focus and determination of a shark.

In more than eighty portraits, award-winning pet photographer and animal rights activist Seth Casteel captures new sides of our old friends with vibrant underwater photography that makes it impossible to look away. Each image bubbles with exuberance and life, a striking reminder that even in the most loveable and domesticated dog, there are more primal forces at work. In Underwater Dogs, Seth Casteel gives playful and energetic testament to the rough-and-tumble joy that our dogs bring into our lives.

An award-winning pet photographer and (bless him) an animal adoption activist, Casteel got the bright idea of photographing dogs swimming, working mostly from below to create spooky-adorable images. Since he began posting them online, his images of doggie-paddling pooches have garnered 150 million views. Possible cult status here.

    Stunning photos

The photos of the dogs underwater are absolutely stunning. Some are funny, some cute, and in some the dogs look like ancient sea monsters rising from the deep - nothing but wide open mouths and sharp teeth, the rest obscured by bubbles or water. In all cases, the photos are stunning. Anyone who likes dogs or has a dog would enjoy this book. I also appreciated the section at the back showing what the dogs normally look like on land (pretty normal, as it turns out - you almost can't recognize them from their underwater photos). I'm not one for coffee table books or photo books in general, but I loved this one so much I ordered another one for a friend.

How old the world is and yet someone has found a new perspective

How old the world is and yet someone has found a new perspective. Underwater Dogs has quickly become the go-to book in our house with my 13,12 and 11 year old nieces and nephew sharing their favorite pictures. A great game is trying to guess the breed from the photo by itself! If you have a kid (or you're a kid inside) you must get this book.

Who would have imagined that photos of dogs swimming underwater

Who would have imagined that photos of dogs swimming underwater could be so much fun? Author/photographer Seth Casteel has proven that such photos aren't just fun, they're hysterical!

Back in 2010, Casteel was on a photo shoot with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Buster. It was meant to be a land shoot, with pictures of the dog romping in the grass. That was until the dog jumped into the pool. When Buster came up for air, Casteel immediately noticed that he appeared completely different. Wet, and well, just different. Casteel got to wondering what the dog looked like underwater, so he hurried home, grabbed a special camera for taking underwater shots, and then jumped into the pool with Buster. From that brief encounter, Underwater Dogs was born.

Over eighty photographs grace the pages of this book and they range from funny to amazing. The reader quickly discovers that water does unimaginably funny things to parts of a dog, particularly the face. Jowls flop about, exposing lots of teeth, eyes pop and bulge, and bodies contort into unusual shapes. Who would have imagined that a fluffy little Dachshund could look so snarly and wolf-like as he reaches for a ball? A Jack Russell swimmings with a play ring in her mouth looks like she was born to live underwater. A tiny little Chihuahua looks downright scary with legs splayed, jowls floating off to the sides, and teeth exposesd as she reaches for a tennis ball. From graceful, to downright odd, this book has a great assortment of dog photos.

Quill says: If you love dogs and need a good laugh, check out Underwater Dogs!

    Great coffee table book

I bought this for a friend who loves animals, a lot!! It is a good book and she is absolutely thrilled with it. I gave it anonnymously and got a 20 minute monologue about how great it was, the photos and the list of the dogs' names with their photos. If you love dogs or have a friend who does, this is a great gift.
