VOYA
With its breathtaking hills and crashing waves, the remote Scottish island is hauntingly beautiful. To five social outcasts, however, it is their worst nightmare. In hopes of reforming these teenagers, their school administration has handpicked them to participate in an educational two-week trip to the island. For the reluctant crew, it promises to be a miserable time for all. But even Axel, arguably the most troubled of the group, could not have foreseen the disaster waiting to befall them. The night before a caving expedition, the gravelly cook regales them with the Legend of the Great Worm that roams the dark tunnels. Although they laugh at her, there is an undercurrent of fear at her words. When the outing ends abruptly with a rockslide that traps the teens in the tunnels with their teacher gravely injured, their bravado crumbles. Bickering escalates into fighting, and the group splits into two factions. Now they must not only battle the unknown dangers of the underground, but they must also face secret fears within themselves. Suspenseful and mysterious, this tale of making choices and survival will fascinate young adult readers. Although set in Scotland, the archetypal characters-bully, liar, punk, prankster, and showoff-are universal and well developed. Although the ending is a bit anticlimactic, it retains enough adventurous flavor to keep one guessing as to what is real and what is only a figment of imagination. Fans of mystery with a blend of unreality will enjoy this quick read. Gr 7-10-Readers who happen to be familiar with the film The Breakfast Club may recognize this title as being, basically, a subterranean version of the 1985 teen-angst classic. Instead of being trapped in a daylong study hall together, five British teens-each one with a distinctly different background and temperament-find themselves trapped in a labyrinthine cave during a field trip in Scotland after a rock slide suddenly seals up the entrance and leaves the group's advisor unconscious. The squabbling students eventually realize that they must put their differences aside and cooperate if they are to survive and-you guessed it-within the course of the ordeal, the angriest and most arrogant among them have their tender undersides exposed. Eventually, all of the cave-bound kids come to realize on some level that fear is the common denominator that drives all kinds of superficial teen behaviors and that one can only overcome insecurity through empathy and understanding. The melodramatic tone and stereotypical characters are questionable enough, but it's this type of exposition-and the story is rife with it-that really drives the novel into cheeseville: "That was in another life, another world. The world up there. Down here, they had all changed." Still, less-discerning readers may enjoy the quick pace and spooky suspense as they work their way to the predictably happy ending.-Jeffrey Hastings, Highlander Way Middle School, Howell, MI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Simultaneously predictable and far-fetched, this amalgam of adventure, psychological study and horror fails to be either a suspenseful story or a thoughtful examination of young people struggling to overcome difficult challenges. Characters are broadly drawn, as evident from the line-up listed on the back cover: "The bully. The liar. The punk. The prankster. The show-off." MacPhail's efforts to humanize her characters are heavy-handed at best. Axel (the bully) turns out to have been abused, while talented, intelligent Zesh (the show-off) suffers from asthma. Plot elements are equally unconvincing. The rationale for these particular students being chosen for a school trip to a remote Scottish island seems contrived, while the reason for the initial cave-in, which traps the five students and their teacher, is never disclosed. The insertion of a second story, told by a German soldier who narrowly survived being trapped in the caves during WWII, seems awkward and artificial. Unlikable characters, unlikely events and an unbelievable monster add up to a story that is unlikely to find an appreciative audience. (Fiction. 12-14)
