From #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, the dark reimagining of the Persephone myth begun in ABANDON continues ... into the Underworld. Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera isn't dead. Not this time. But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey. Her captor, John Hayden, claims it's for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they've come back as Furies, intent on vengeance . . . on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves. But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there . . . and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies. And unless Pierce is careful, this time there'll be no escape.

Teen romance leaps into the realm of mythology in popular author Meg Cabot's second novel in her "Abandon" trilogy. Inspired by the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone, Underworld chronicles the complicated romance between Pierce, an average teenage girl, and John Hayden, a death deity who rules the underworld beneath Isla Huesos, an island in Key West. Having first met in the previous novel, Pierce now finds herself swept into the Underworld when John kidnaps her in order to protect her from the vicious Furies, who are attempting to kill Pierce, presumably as a way to hurt John. Pierce discovers that the family she left behind may still be at risk, and she must find a way to convince John to try and help them. The novel follows directly on the heels of its predecessor, so readers will want to check out Abandon before diving into the second book. Those who enjoyed the first will find that Cabot fills out the backstories of John and other characters, and a cliffhanger ending will keep readers waiting for the conclusion. However, the novel proves a rocky edition to the genre of YA romance. John shows himself to be both violent and manipulative, constantly lying and misleading Pierce, only to make her feel guilty any time she tries to confront him about his actions. Though Pierce is initially characterized as being a bit wild (it is mentioned she was expelled from her last school), overall she proves to have little backbone or common sense. Fans of paranormal romance will enjoy the ride, but those looking for a smarter heroine might want to look elsewhere. Reviewer: Caitlin Marineau

In this second book of the Abandon series, seventeen-year-old Pierce has been taken to the Underworld by John Hayden, protector of the dead. He insists that he is trying to keep the Furies from killing her, but on earth they are after her family. Pierce is drawn to John, but she is not ready for the strong feelings he instills in her. He wants to keep her safe in the Underworld and tricks her into eating there so she will be confined to his world, like Persephone, on whom this story is based. Pierce convinces John to take her back when she discovers that her cousin Alex is in danger. They all have to face the consequences of their decisions, which in the end will change their lives forever. This long-awaited novel begins where the first left off. It would be difficult to follow without reading Abandon (Scholastic, 2011/Voya June 2011) first, but those who have begun the series will want to continue. John's history is explained, and his friends are introduced in this book, showing that he is not alone in the Underworld. The main conflict here is between Pierce's desire to be with John and her need to return home to help save her family from the Furies. John just wants to keep Pierce with him. They both compromise and grow in the process. The ending is unexpected and sets up the next installment. Paranormal romance fans will enjoy this series; buy where the first one is popular. Gr 8 Up—This modern-day twist on the Greek myth of Hades and Persphone picks up where Abandon (Scholastic, 2011) left off. Pierce Oliviera is back in the Underworld with her boyfriend and death deity, John. Not only does he want her to stay there, but he also feels that it is the only place where he can truly protect her from the Furies, evil beings who are bent on harming her. When Pierce's family is threatened, she convinces John that they must leave the Underworld in order to help and to try and make their own destiny. Their crazy adventures in Isla Huesos reveal important information about John's dark past, the island, and the wealthy and powerful Rector family. They also strengthen Pierce and John's relationship, proving that love requires trust, sacrifice, and a certain amount of risk. This fast-paced sequel is filled with action, romance, revenge, and lots of suspense. Cabot's main characters become more defined while new ones add some spice to the plotline. This is a satisfying read for teens who love mythology, the paranormal, and intrigue, and the cliff-hanger ending will leave readers eager for the next installation.—Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY

I have been reading Meg Cabot novels ever since I started reading books, and I'm a huge fan of hers. When I found out that she was writing a Greek mythology-themed series, I was really excited to read the whole trilogy. Abandon was amazing but somehow the sequel didn't live up to my expectations. The plot was a bit messy. Everything was happening so fast in the beginning and I had a hard time trying to remember everything that went down in Abandon (maybe that was my mistake, I should have reread it, so I really recommend it rereading Abandon!). But I enjoyed the chapters that took place in the Underworld and all scenes that had John in it (obviously!). Pierce was so annoying! She never knew what she wanted: stay in the Underworld or go back to her ordinary life. Which, of course, resulted in many fights with her boyfriend. John was by far the best character. He is different than most love interests. He is tough yet sweet and sometimes he could be a bit mean to Pierce (which I thoroughly enjoyed!). The new characters gave Underworld a new side and I loved them! It made the novel a lot more enjoyable. Certainly Cabot could have done a better job with this novel but I really can't say that I didn't enjoy it. I am a sucker for Greek mythology and the Persephone myth is a favorite of mine. One thing that I really can say about this novel though, is that it isn't in any way boring. It was an enjoyable read and I loved the ending. After reading the synopsis for the next one, I'm really looking forward to the third installment!

If I had the time I would have read this book straight through, it was that good! I loved the take on the Fury legend and the writing was fantastic.

Excellent second book in the Abandon series. This story quickly draws you in. The interactions between Pierce and John are very engaging. I really liked getting to know more of John's background, and finding out what makes him tick. The introduction of new characters brings out exciting dimensions to the story. I'll be waiting axiously for the finally book Awaken to arrive.
