Cet ouvrage fait suite au premier volume d'Une introduction à la médecine traditionnelle chinoise, brève exposition des fondements du corpus théorique. À la lumière des textes canoniques et au-delà d’un recueil d’informations traduites à partir des manuels destine's à l’enseignement et disponibles en Chine, ce nouveau volume s’emploie à dresser le tableau du raisonnement clinique en médecine chinoise, de ses bases et de son contenu par une mise en lumière des diagnostics de certaines affections courantes en médecines occidentale et chinoise.

Il aborde les divers aspects du processus diagnostique traditionnel : fondements de l’étiologie et de la pathologie, recueil des informations du tableau clinique à travers l’examen du patient et leur exploitation grâce aux outils de diagnostic, qui permettent de cerner au plus près la réalité du processus étiopathogénique ainsi que ses conséquences sur la physiologie du patient et l’affection dont il souffre. Y sont également introduits les signes et méthodes du pronostic.

S’appuyant sur les résultats de la recherche scientifique contemporaine en physiologie, en épidémiologie et en biologie, ce deuxième volume s’attache à démontrer que les conceptions médicales traditionnelles de l’étiologie ou de la pathogénie constituent une vision originale et réaliste des causes de la maladie et de ses traitements. L'approche macroscopique et holistique caractéristique de la médecine chinoise n'est en effet pas incompatible avec une analyse fine des processus étiopathogéniques et des moyens à mettre en œuvre pour restaurer la capacité fondamentale de l'organisme à maintenir son équilibre physiologique et son adaptation au milieu. À l’instar du premier volume, l’enracinement et la continuité historiques des différentes notions sont étaye's par des textes classiques pertinents, canoniques ou plus récents.
