    *Written by Nikki Day @TheGuiltyKitty*

Unexpected Gifts by Elena Aitken was nothing short of a beautifully written and all inspiring novel that had me breathless from start to finish. Only once I had turned that last page did I finally catch my breath. However, if I’m being completely honest I would have happily gone without. Not only was it one of the best romance stories I've read in ages, but it actually left my extremely single ass optimistic that I’ll someday meet the man of my dreams! And believe me, that’s not an easy feat to accomplish.

A perfect Christmas fairy tale, this story begins with Ms Andi Williams, a young woman who hates Christmas. However, she isn't without good reason. After a series of traumatic events leads to a bad break up, the holiday season becomes nothing but a painful reminder of what she no longer has. So, she runs away to a remote lodge in the heart of the Canadian Rockies to try and put the pieces of her life back together. However, a mix up with her reservation leaves her stranded at the lodge without a room to stay in and in the midst of a snowstorm. Enter, the man that I now see in my dreams. His name is Colin Hartford, and he absolutely loves Christmas. Dreaming of a white Christmas like the ones he used to know, business had kept him in the Caribbean islands for the past five years, and nothing is going to stop him from having the perfect holiday experience he so longed for. Then, he sees her. The moment he first lays eyes on Andi there is just something about her, and on a whim he offers her a room in his villa and reluctantly she agrees. Despite her aversion to the holidays, Colin makes it his mission to convert her into a full on Christmas lover, ugly sweaters and all. His plan soon works, but it isn't long before he realizes that he wants more than that; he wants her.

As someone who has read somewhere around a billion love stories, they begin to get pretty repetitive after a while. This one, however, was refreshing and even left me feeling inspired! Not only did it revive the hopeless romantic in me, but Elena Aitken paints the perfect picture of a Winter Wonderland. Admittedly, I couldn't help myself and the very next day booked a weekend stay in the mountains for Christmas. Now all I need is to meet my own Colin Hartford and my life will be complete!
Ahem, anyway, the characters were realistic and the plot kept me guessing. Not to mention I could practically smell the hot cider through the pages. With my attention span, stories that move along too slowly lose my interest, but that is not the case with Unexpected Gifts. Within just the first few pages you feel like you’re a part of it and you begin to care about the characters.

In short, I highly recommend it! The only negative I could find with this book was the fact that it ended. I consider myself to now be a devoted fan, and I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Unexpected Gifts starts with Andi wanting to get away for Christ

Unexpected Gifts starts with Andi wanting to get away for Christmas because the relatives she planned on being with decided to go away at the last minute. She doesn't like Christmas so is quite content to go to a lodge so she could spend Christmas alone.

Then we meet Colin who has been in the tropics for many years and this year decides he wants to come back and spend Christmas in the snow instead of on a beach.  Andi and Colin end up at the same Canadian lodge but Andi doesn't have a room.  She had met Colin briefly a long time ago so when he offers to let her use one of the bedrooms in his villa, she agrees.  The blizzard helps her make the decision since she can't go anywhere anyway.

When Colin finds out that Andi doesn't like Christmas he decides to sign them up for activities the lodge has arranged so that Andi will start to like Christmas. Aitken is a very illustrative writer who creates an entire world for her audience to get lost in. Every aspect of this novel is fully developed in a manner that you can’t help but picture. The descriptions are so clear that the reader can picture the Christmas lights, feel the snow falling and smell the hot chocolate.

I liked at they are instantly attracted to each other, but neither wants a relationship.  It adds some suspense to the novel.  And it was terrific how Colin decided a relationship with Andi may not be too bad stepped up to the challenge of making her see this too.

I loved the story line and the setting in a Canadian mountain lodge with all of the Christmas festivities.

I really enjoyed this book.  It is a warm Christmas story and made me smile.
