Overview

Victoria Osteen has gained recognition and respect as a co-pastor of the world famous Lakewood Church together with her husband and best-selling author, Joel Osteen. Her message of faith and love targeted towards women and children have gained her respect and a loyal following of her own.

In Victoria Osteen's new storybook series, she takes her readers on exhuberant fantasy adventures that encourage children to use their imaginations to grow in their faith and inspiration. In this tale on the high-seas, two friends, "Captain" Jon and his "First Mate" Sue, embark on an adventure of imagination and discovery. While exploring the world on their imaginary ship, they rescue a couple of grumpy pirates whose boat has crashed while sailing after the ultimate treasure. Told with yo-ho-ho, sing-songy rhymes, these two adventurous friends teach the pirates that the best treasure of all is the love in our hearts.

A fun treasure map and answer-aloud question section at the end of the story encouage parents and children to talk about the lessons they've just learned and to discover the adventure in their own daily lives.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Victoria Osteen is best known as the co-pastor of Houston's Lakewood Church and as the wife of Joel Osteen, her co-pastor. More recently, she earned media attention as the author of the Love Your Life, a spiritual self-help bestseller. With Unexpected Treasures, she launches a series of children's books designed to set youngsters on the path of faith. This picture book relates the story of Captain Jon and First Mate Sue as they embark on an imaginary trip into a pirate region. Gangway for godly lessons.
Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Captain Jon and First Mate Sue set sail in their imaginary ship and immediately spot another ship in trouble. They invite the quarreling Curly Beard and Pirate Fred aboard and begin lecturing them about the values of friendship. They explain that everyone makes mistakes and then share their lunch with the two visitors. The lectures about friendship and perseverance in the face of adversity continue as the four "sail away" to fix the hole in the pirates' pretend ship. They discover a box of treasure along the way, which the children share. A "Nuggets of Gold Treasure Map" appears near the back of the book with inspirational couplets called "Anchor Thoughts." A "Captain's Q & A" page contains questions for discussion. Written in verse, the text is difficult to read. Artificial-sounding language is forced into uneven rhymes. The didactic tone throughout detracts from the sense of story. Colorful illustrations depict four attractive children and help convey the feeling of make-believe. The book seems to be designed for adults to use with children in the context of a church school setting. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.

Captain Jon and First Mate Sue set sail on an imaginary pirate ship and rescue some stranded pirates, but are unable to salvage their treasure. While the crew members argue about whose fault the wreck is, Sue reminds them that although they lost their gold, they gained two lifelong friends. The new pals exchange tokens of friendship (a shell necklace and a treasure map). "'It's strange,' said Captain Curly Beard./And then he smiled real wide./'This giving stuff is really fun/I feel all warm inside.'" Osteen's text attempts to inspire readers to search for treasures within themselves and others, but the syrupy text is awkward and strains to rhyme. The overall effect is preachy, and the illustrations are uninspired and stiff.-Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Warren & Waldoboro, ME

    positive values

I liked this book because it emphasizes positive values instead of the nasty pirate traits. Your friends are your true treasures. It's written in verse, the rhymes are fun, however my son's eye glazed over at times which I interpret as: it's harder to follow the rhyme than prose. Still, I was very happy with this NICE pirate find.
