I love this series! This first book was captivating and with Taboo Tara Maya has only got me more trapped in the spell she has written.
There were parts that had me laughing and other parts that had me wanting to smack the charaters upside the their heads.
The wait for the next book is killing me and even after reading a lengthy sample of Sacrifice I'm ready for more.
This series promises to deliver everything I love about fantasy novels.
The cultures of the different tribes are futher defined in this book and more of the history of the world is revealed.
The flow is smooth and not once was i tempted to skip ahead.
I am officialy Tara Maya fan.

This is a great introduction to The Unfinished Song series, I was afraid as it was brief I wouldn't enjoy it but I was wrong, The characters are deep, the cultures Tara Maya has created are beautiful but also raw. There are intrigues that keep you reading, the wealthy poor, magic, non-magic, fae human, exile, student, teacher, pariah, hero, you meet them all and more. When you reach the end you will be thirsty for the next book. I finished this in a few uninterrupted hours and started reading Taboo right away. I'd buy this series in a heart beat and will be watching this author for more of her delicious writing.

(Non native english writer, hence the short review) Initiate is the first book of an (as yet) unfinished series. This leads to the 2 only (and minor) "cons" I found with it : a BIG cliffhanger, and as I enjoyed it greatly, some frustration to see it end.
It was however a GREAT read, leading me into one domain of Fantasy that is not so frequently used : tribal/ethnic fantasy. The setting is indeed a mix between pre-historic, indigenous / aboriginal. This mix, while kind of dark and gritty (mostly in undercurrents) is enhanced by a highly faerical and lighter currennt, giving a great mix.
The story in itself possesses the same balance between dark and light, adventure and some kinds of romance.
As a conclusion, I must say that if Balance really is the best word to describe the book, my enthusiasm regarding it was far from balanced ...
And the follow-up (which I recommend also) keeps the promises of that first volume.

I liked the character development in this ensemble cast of humans, fae and shapeshifters. Kavio remains my favorite hero, so far.
This second book in the series also gets a bit more detailed with the history and lore of the different tribes.
