Overview

Alex was quite sure that "gifted" was a term which delusional parents applied to their strictly average children, that vampires were gorgeous dead guys in her eighth-grade girls' novels, and "Seers" was a middle schooler's misspelling of a department store famous for power tools. Teachers, however, don't know everything, and it’s Alex’s turn to be educated.

Hoping just to clear her mind, Alex Crocker leaves work for a late night run across the small city of Bristol, Massachusetts. Instead she is dragged violently into a feud she never would have known existed. She quickly learns she’s being hunted for possessing a gift she never wanted, one that could kill her or provide her the power she’ll need to protect herself and those she cares for.

Despite her desire to maintain her independence, Alex quickly becomes tied to the Rectinatti vampires through bonds of friendship, loyalty, and most surprisingly, love. These bonds, coupled with the new knowledge that she is in grave danger are enough to make her want to stay, but it’s learning what is really at stake that drives her to fight.

Meet the Author

Lauren Grimley lives in central Massachusetts where she grew up, but her heart is on the beaches of Cape Cod where she spends as much of her time as possible. After graduating from Boston University she became a middle school English teacher. She has her seventh graders to thank for starting her on this path; it was they who convinced a skeptical new teacher vampire stories were worth reading. She now spends her time writing them when she should be correcting papers.

From the cover I wasn't sure what to expect, but the story was not nearly as dark as the cover image suggested.
A strong-willed woman in her twenties is sucked into a world of vampires she didn't know existed and finds that she too has special gifts. There is some romance, but I wouldn't call the book a romance overall. It is more about Alex's journey of self-discovery and learning about the vampires-- their history, society, conflicts, and individual personalities. Through this she gains a better understanding of herself, her childhood, and what her future might hold. The book is very character driven, with the majority of the story taking place in the country home of five vampires. There is lots of joking and verbal sparring between them, like a group of roommates in their twenties. There is relatively little actual action, and this book felt to me like the first in a series rather than a complete, stand-alone work. I hope this is the case! I feel like I now know the characters and would like to see what happens with everyone (especially Alex) next!

Meet Alex, a twenty-five year old high school teacher. She is fiercely independent and stubborn to boot. She has always felt as though she could tell when someone was upset, lying, or telling the truth, you know, just that gut feeling. What if the gut feelings she has are actually more than that? On one of her evening runs, Alex is attacked and dragged into an alley. She begins to get close to escaping when two more big guys enter the picture. She only remembers a little before there is nothing but blackness. When she awakens, she is surrounded by four men and one woman who she believes, Lord help her, are vampires. Certain she has lost her mind, she hears them telling her that not only are they vampires, but she is their Seer, someone who can sense the emotions of those around her. Alex is certain that she will awaken from this nightmare and find that she is at home in bed, but, after three days, she realizes she will have to accept these as truths. There is something else: one of her two brothers that she thought was dead, is alive and being held prisoner by another coven of vampires because of his Seer gift. Can Alex help save her brother and find herself in the process?

Give me more! This book is irresistible, and made me sad that it ended. Alex is conceived as a woman that most women want to be like. She is someone who accomplishes things that seem impossible. Laura Grimley spins a tale of suspense, pain, and yes ladies, a little bit of love. An enjoyable read from cover to cover. Ladies, grab yourself a good cup of tea and a cozy chair; you are going to want to get comfortable because you won’t want to put this one down.
