Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) seeks to provide children around the world with the same opportunities for medical care, appropriate education, decent housing, and nutritious food. In the 60 years since its inception in 1946, it has made enormous contributions to improving the standard of living for children everywhere. Initially an emergency fund called the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, the organization was aimed at helping the children affected by World War II. It proved so successful that the United Nations made it a permanent part of the organization in 1953, shortening the name, but keeping the abbreviation. Today its mission of advocacy continues to be essential in improving living conditions and developing opportunities for a better future for children. The book's information is presented in descriptive text, accompanied by detailed paragraphs set apart against variously colored backgrounds. The book also includes side bars labeled "… ON THE SCENE …" and "WHAT DO YOU THINK?" Photographic illustrations and other graphics support and add interest to the text. This book is part of the "Global Organizations" series written to provide points-of-view that inspire debate about the success of each organization and help in the evaluation of the organization's actions. It concludes with a glossary, suggestions for further reading, a list of web sites, and an index. It would be a good addition to classes on social and current events, in debate classes, and as a resource for AP classes. Reviewer: Hazel Buys
