Given to me for review: This started rather simply, basic information
about a cast of characters and little glimpses of their lives. A magical
world called Refuge, and of course our plain Jane world here are the
basics of the locations, but there is always that something “more.” That
“more” occurs at that point between the two locations, and leads to an
amazing story of magic, history, advancement of a culture and of the
people in that culture. The paths that the characters take that lead
them on an amazing journey of discovery of themselves, their
relationships, and their history. This is a book full of discovery of
magical proportions, and I would recommend it to anyone to read. The
story is so fantastical that one could only hope to become a part of
that world, so the author did a great job in really bringing the reader
into the fray. I hope that we can all be so lucky to someday find “Refuge.”

Great Read For Teens and Adults It starts out with a young but powerful
woman trying to save her home. It turns into a great story of love,
friendship, determination, respect, magic, and mystery. It is set on
another planet with magic and unicorns. All the action (romance/
violence) is there but mild enough for teens to read and intriguing
enough for adults to be interested. The main characters are Tyana
Counter, the young powerful witch and her familiar Karim (unicorn).
Detective Sergeant Marcus Samuels, a new arrival from Earth and him
familiar Rebel (unicorn). They have many friends along the way that help
them in their journey. The discover other species that live in their
world that they have no idea existed. The plot was exciting and I did
not see the true villain or savior until it got to them so you wanted to
keep reading to find out “who, why, how”. There are some interesting
issues raised in the book that are taken from our own struggles with
humanity and equality with race and gender. There are a few grammar
errors but not enough that I stopped reading. The book was a nice read
I hope there is more stories from this world. The book ended nicely and
there is room for more books but it does not demand more to finish this
story. It was a quick read for me and I enjoyed it. I will definitely be
looking are more from this author as this was my first by Derek White.

This was an interesting book. The combination of magic/unicorns and of
other worlds made for a compelling read. While I did notice a few
editing mistakes, it did not distract me from reading and finishing the
book. I would recommend it to others.

Welcome to Refuge, where unicorns really do exist and magic is the norm. In the last few years, people have been losing their ability to perform magic and Merlin, yes! Merlin!, leaves it up to Tyana and her familiar, a unicorn named Karim to discover why. Tyana is the only witch to have a unicorn as a familiar and the bond she shares with Karim is unlike any other. Tyana and Karim set off on a journey through Refuge to find out why people are losing their magical abilities and who is behind it. Returning home she meets up with her old friend Darren, who lost his magic when they were children and meets Megan and her little brother Thomas, who were transported to Refuge from Earth because of their magical abilities. Along the way she also meets Marcus, whom she falls in love with. Unicorn Witch is a wonderful story full of magic and adventure.
