From The CriticsReviewer: Michelle A. King, BS (UIC College of Applied Health Sciences)
Description: This book takes an in-depth look at critical issues that surround female athletes of all ages.
Purpose: The purpose is to shed light on issues and pathologies specific to female athletes. This is a worthy objective because there is limited information in the field that is specific to women.
Audience: Although written for healthcare professionals, the book would benefit both health and fitness professionals and students who are going into health care.
Features: The book covers gender-specific physiological, anatomical, and psychological issues that are unique to female athletes. It conveys the information well and, because it is well organized, it can be referenced easily. A unique feature is the summary at the end of each chapter, which is beneficial for all readers. Each chapter ends with an abundance of useful references. However, at times it appears some chapter authors address issues without providing support for their conclusions. Unfortunately, there are many minor typographical errors.
Assessment: This is a good, well-organized contribution to the field that will be useful to anyone dealing with female athletes. With a few improvements, the book will be a great addition to the other literature in this field.
