Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Students planning reports will welcome this "Countries of the World" series with its abundance of information packed into an appealing format illustrated by the lively and well-reproduced color photos one would expect from National Geographic. Five sections cover geography, nature, history, people and culture, and government and economy, each highlighted by an appropriate map and sidebars with interesting, offbeat details. In United Kingdom, writers can learn about British weather (changeable), spectacular mountains, lakes and fens, and glimpse the Thames Barrier that protects London against storm surges. The U.K.s adaptable wildlife includes foxes in cities, puffins on islands and a magnificent red deer stag pictured on a Scottish moor, while the history section whisks readers through the centuries with Celts, Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans. Especially fascinating are the pages about the 19th and 20th centuries, epitomized by a photograph of a deserted cotton mill brooding beside a canal. People and festivals are fun; a few paragraphs relating to the arts include photos of a Turner painting and a Shakespearean production (much more research would be needed). After a brief look at political parties and traditions in government, kids will appreciate the extra features: a useful bibliography of books, inviting websites and National Geographic articles as well as some super suggestions for ways to add zest to a report about the U.K. The final endpapers reveal a timeline of British history. This attractive series will be fun for browsers and offer a motivating push for reluctant report-writers. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft

Review title: Grand Land. A united kingdom is a "force"

    Review title: Grand Land.
A united kingdom is a "force" to deal with and this book about the United Kingdom shows just how great a force is behind a kingdom that is unified. This book has great information about the countries that form the United Kingdom. When you read this book you will learn many fascinating facts about the development of the countries that now make up one kingdom. There is plenty of history and present day information to be able to comply a book or oral report for students in grades three to five. Inside the book the photos are engaging and may make students want to see this United Kingdom "in person."
