This textbook is in serious need of editing. The author clearly knows his subject but fails to communicate it in an accessible and interesting way. To convey an idea like 'The head of the family was also the head of the government,' Remy says, 'The head of the primitive family was the authority that served as a government.' This kind of wordiness creates a sludge of verbage which only the most dedicated students will even attempt to negotiate. His ideas of presentations, however (multi-media) are good. The text itself is far too general and lacks subordination. Unless given specific instructions by a teacher, the students would have a very hard time knowing what the most important points in each section were--and the most likely to be on a test.
