Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
There are many reference works dealing with the subjects of intelligence and espionage, among them Richard Deacon's Spyclopedia: The Comprehensive Handbook of Espionage (LJ 3/1/89) and G.J.A. O'Toole's The Encyclopedia of Intelligence and Espionage (LJ 1/89). Is there need for another with nearly 800 pages and a $95 price tag? Surprisingly, the answer is yes, at least for specialized research libraries and some government offices. Like the others, this book is not complete, even in the chosen subject and time frame--U.S. intelligence since World War II, with emphasis upon military and weapons systems items. It is weak on space and satellite entries and biographies, except for heads of intelligence agencies and spies. Strengths include the full text of nonsecret laws and executive orders that relate to intelligence organization and activities, a chronology, and the bibliography of 102 additional sources of detailed information.-- George H. Siehl, Library of Congress
The entries, each with references, encompass all aspects of intelligence, from its gathering to its utilization, and all types: strategic, tactical, operational, scientific and technical, political, economic, sociological, military, medical. Also included are listings of acronyms and of major weapons systems. A chronology covers relevant events since 1941. The twenty-five appendices present significant executive and congressional statements regarding the intelligence community after WWII. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
