Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Borges
This high-interest detailed text is part of an attractive series of books about countries around the world. In this new book the presented information offers a fresh approach to learning about the rich history, geographical features, and cultural diversity of the United States of America. Attention is given to the historical impact of the Cold War and the Vietnam War, the impact of environmental disasters in the US, and the section about the infrastructure of America includes information about the US health care system and the high cost of a college education. Nonfiction text features such as a table of contents, clear titles and subtitles, and well-labeled photographs, illustrations, maps, and charts make this text very reader-friendly for school-aged children. The detailed information within this text is well organized and very relevant for the reader who is learning about the role of the US in the world today. The rich information includes such detail as the bravery of Harriet Tubman during the Civil War, protesters during the Vietnam War, the most commonly spoken languages in the United States, how to make an American favorite (chocolate brownies), and the devastating effect of Hurricane Katrina on the lives of people in New Orleans. One of the final pages of this text is a fact file with up-to-date data such as the life expectancy in America, the number of Internet users in America, and the largest American cities and their populations. There is also a timeline, a glossary, and a list of websites where readers can go to learn more information about the United States of America. In or out of the classroom, readers will learn fascinating information about the United States when they read this book. Most importantly, the facts in this book are relevant to today's world and significant in helping a young person develop a complete and accurate understanding of America in the world today. Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Series books about countries of the world are increasingly popular among nonfiction publishers. In order to attract readership, the books must offer accurate information, added features such as maps and statistical information, and high quality illustrations. At forty-eight pages long, this volume of the "Countries Around the World" series cannot be more than superficial in its coverage of any topic or of any country. The topics it addresses include history, resources, climate, wildlife, education, food, culture, entertainment, leaders, health, and sports. The entire history of the nation since Jamestown is discussed in thirteen paragraphs, for example. There are several added features throughout the book including sidebars that highlight a particular subject or person. There is one with a list of Spanish terms, English equivalents and Spanish pronunciation. While the English term and the Spanish pronunciation are correct, two out of five of the Spanish terms are misspelled; something that should have been easy to verify. Back matter includes a fact file, a very selective list of famous Americans, the words to the national anthem, a list of national holidays, a timeline, a glossary, a brief bibliography including websites, a list of places to visit, a traceable flag and map, and an index. There were no sources listed for any facts like population, life expectancy, growth rate, etc. The price is excessive, particularly given the inaccuracy and lack of editorial quality. I cannot recommend even the more moderately priced paperback edition because of the flaws. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
