Unitone World Sampler, Vol. 1: An Electronic World

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Rick Anderson
The material on this teaser compilation is drawn from four discs scheduled for release over the course of 2001, each of them licensed from the European Law & Auder label and all planned for issuance under Unitone's Unitone World imprint. Don't be deceived -- this isn't "world music" in the sense you might have come to expect. While there are exotic elements in the mix (ethnic percussion, modal free-reed keening, melismatic winds and voices), the governing principle is one of gentle, slightly jazzy, and occasionally eerie drum'n'bass experimentalism. "20 Camels," by Friends, Lovers & Family, seems to draw equally on North African plucked strings and a faint whiff ...

"20 Camels," by Friends, Lovers & Family, seems to draw equally on North African plucked strings and a faint whiff of didgeridoo, while keeping everything anchored to a solid bed of swinging, mid-tempo funk; Fluid's "Crashed" goes for a more abstract groove, blending wordless monastic vocals with the sound of a hard drive being devoured by insects and a multitude of floor toms; Wheel's "Kayagumbo" sounds kind of like a funkier outtake from Bill Laswell's Hear No Evil. For those with only a passing interest in the fringier elements of drum'n'bass and IDM, this compilation will probably suffice, but adepts will want to watch for the albums.

Finally available here in the States!

Law & Auder's foundations were laid down at the start of the 90's by the production outfit responsible for many sought after dance floor jungle, techno, and ambient gems on labels like Subon Base, Southern Bleep, Proone, Slammin' Vinyl and Rising High. Having discovered how difficult it is to be taken seriously if you are on the cutting edge, Law & Auder was born out of a need to create our own uncompromising platform for this music and the people who make it. Whether it's experimental drum n' bass or the fusion of cross culture music, dub electronica, break beat or plain wired-arse, Law & Auder sees it's mission, bringing together electronic techno with organic textures of traditional instruments into a nature flow. In 2001 Unitone Recordings (under the Unitone World moniker) steps up to provide the means to bring this music directly to the States, and the burgeoning electronic scene in its midst. Scheduling the release of only the most select cuts from Avantgardism Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, and from East-Westercism and Further East-Westercisms, Unitone World has created five incredible collections, including the new Unitone World Sampler 1 - An Electronic World, which will give people a taste of the great music Law & Auder has compiled in these four discs. All of these discs are schedule to come out steadily,
