Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
From the author of The Tower to the Sun (1997) and The Paradise Garden (1998) comes a heartwarming story about a shy dog who uses her courage to save the day. Smaller and quieter than the other dogs at the animal shelter, Unknown, as the sign above her cage denotes, stays in her box amidst the shadows and does not draw any attention to herself. Some of the other dogs, including Stray and GrownTooLarge, rush to the front of the cage every day, barking loudly and trying to garner the attention of prospective owners. One night, when a fierce storm passes the shelter, a few cracks of lightning strike nearby trees, causing a fire to erupt. In minutes, the entire area surrounding the cage is engulfed in flames and the dogs' lives are in serious danger. Unknown decides to take matters into her own paws and creates a hole in the fence, just big enough for her to squeeze through. When she clears the area of blazing trees, she seeks help from the nearby caretaker. By the end of the ordeal, all of the dogs are saved, and Unknown becomes a hero and gets adopted by a loving family. Watercolor and ink paintings perfectly capture the dreariness of life at the animal shelter and the text simply dances across the page. Seeing life from a dog's perspective will certainly be an eyeopening experience for readers of this wonderful picture book. 2000, Walker Publishing Company, Ages 4 to 8, $15.95. PreS-Gr 3-A charming story about a little dog in an animal shelter that courageously rescues the other dogs from a fire. Each of the canines has been named for the circumstances that brought it there: "Unwanted-Christmas-Gift," "Owner-Died," "Stray," and "Unknown." The homeless pups watch as families come to choose a pet and pass by their cages, leaving them sad and tired. One night, trees outside the shelter are struck by lightning and catch fire. Shy, little Unknown digs a hole and escapes to alert the caretaker and the animals are saved. As her story hits the news, the shelter is flooded with offers to adopt her. The celebrated pooch poignantly tells her friend, "I got lucky. But it would be good-if we could put all the humans in cages and walk along with our noses in the air and choose the ones WE wanted." The watercolor-and-ink paintings carry the plot from the dark, gray shelter to the bright, orange flames of fire. The animals' faces and poses express their eagerness as well as their disappointment and fear. This is a sure bet for any prospective young dog owner to stimulate discussion about owning a pet for life.-Holly Belli, Bergen County Cooperative Library System, West Caldwell, NJ Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
