If you are selecting among the tourist attractions of Europe, and elect to visit Disneyland Paris, the challenge becomes how to see the best of the various Disney offerings with some economy of time, effort, and finances. Make no mistake: There is nothing quite like Disneyland Paris. Incredible in its scope, genius, beauty, and imagination, it is a joy and wonderment for people of all ages. A fantasy, a dream, and a vision all rolled into one, it transcends simple entertainment, making us children and adventurers, freeing us for an hour or a day to live the dreams of our past, present, and future.

Disneyland Paris, even more than its Florida counterpart, embodies that quiet, charming spirit of nostalgia that so characterized Walt Disney himself. Disneyland Paris is vast yet intimate, etched in the tradition of its founder, yet continually changing. A visit to Disneyland Paris is fun, but it is also a powerful and moving experience, a living testimony to the achievements and immense potential of the loving and life-embracing side of man's creativity.

Certainly we are critics, but it is the responsibility of critics to credit that which is done well as surely as to reflect negatively on that which is done poorly. The Disney attractions are special above and beyond any man-made entertainment offering we know of.

What Does Disneyland Paris Consist Of?

Disneyland Paris was opened in 1992 on a 5,000-acre tract surrounded almost exclusively by farms just 30 kilometers east of Paris. Located strategically in this vast expanse are the Disneyland Paris theme park, six resort hotels, a convention center, an elaborate campground, a nighttime entertainment complex, shopping arcades, almost 30 full-service restaurants, golf courses, several large interconnected lakes, and a transportation system consisting of four-lane highways, a train station, and a system of canals.

The theme park is a collection of adventures, rides, and shows drawn from Disney cartoons and films, and symbolized by Le Ch√Ęteau de la Belle au Bois Dormant (Sleeping Beauty's Castle). Disneyland Paris park is divided into five sub areas or "lands" arranged around a central hub. The first one you encounter is Main Street, U.S.A., which connects the Disneyland Paris entrance with the central hub. Moving clockwise around the hub, the other lands are Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Discoveryland. All five lands will be described in detail later.

Sitting above the entranceway to the Disneyland Paris theme park is the Disneyland Hotel, the most luxurious of the development's six resort hotels. Just outside the entrance area beyond the Disneyland Hotel is a train station, which serves as the terminus of a suburban rail line connecting Disneyland Paris and Paris, as well as a stop for Eurostar international and SNCF (French National Railroad) long-distance trains. Adjacent to the train station, but on the opposite side of the tracks from the theme park, is the Disneyland Paris guest parking facility and Disney Village, a nongated (no admission charge) entertainment complex featuring restaurants, shops, production shows, and nightclubs. Beyond Disney Village is a large manmade lake fronted respectively on three sides by the Hotel New York, the Newport Bay Club, and the Sequoia Lodge Resorts. Connected to the lake complex by walkway, road, and canal are the Hotel Cheyenne and the Hotel Santa Fe. Some distance away, and accessible only by car, are the Davy Crockett tent and trailer (caravan) campground and the golf courses.
