Interviews & Essays

Q&A with author Bob Sehlinger

Q. What are your five most important tips for having a successful Disney vacation?

1. Prepare physically. You'll walk as much as 8-12 miles in a day. Start your family on a walking regimen months in advance to build endurance.

2. Don't overload your agenda. Less is more at Walt Disney World. Better to devour Disney World a bite at a time with plenty of rest and relaxation in between.

3. Resign yourself to not being able to see every thing in one visit.

4. Have a plan but don't over plan. It's about having fun, not sticking rigidly to an itinerary. Allow for spontaneity.

5. Anticipate surprises both good and bad. Stay loose, roll with the punches, and maintain a good sense of humor.

Q. What is Downtown Disney?

Located on the north side of WDW, Downtown Disney is a shopping, recreational, dining, and entertainment complex arrayed around Lake Buena Vista. Divided into three contiguous areas: Disney Marketplace, Hyperion Wharf (formerly the Pleasure Island nightclub complex), and the West Side. While the Marketplace is Disney World's shopping Shangri-La, the West side offers a 24-screen AMC movie theater and is home to Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba. Also on the West Side is DisneyQuest, a sophisticated electronic games arcade frequently referred to as "a theme park in a box." Hyperion Wharf is a venue in the making that may become Hyperbole Wharf, Wishful Wharf, or any of a dozen other things as Disney laboriously ponders its options.

Q. What is the best Disney World restaurant for a quiet romantic meal?

Our experience and that of our readers indicate that quiet romantic meals are few and far between at WDW. Children are the rule rather than the exception at WDW's better restaurants, and readers attest to the presence of kids at all hours of the evening. Often, the later the hour, the crankier the children. Pressed to offer a suggestion, however, I would recommend Citricos at the Grand Floridian Hotel and Spa. The food is excellent and the subdued atmosphere tends to attract fewer families than other Disney dining venues.

Q. What's available for adults in the way of nightlife at Walt Disney World?

With the former nightspots at Pleasure Island shuttered, what remains is an Irish Pub and the House Of Blues, both offering live music at Downtown Disney. Overt at Disney's Boardwalk there's a dueling piano bar and a dance club. At the Swan Resort, there's Kimonos, a Japanese sushi and tempura restaurant that hosts karaoke after 9 p.m. Rounding out the roster at the Coronado Springs Resort is Rix Lounge, a Vegas-ultra lounge clone that seems to come to life only when there's a big convention at the hotel.

Q. How can you save money on food and dining?

Disney World restaurants are typically expensive so economizing on meals is much easier if you stay and eat outside Walt Disney World. Free coupon books abound outside of Walt Disney World and can save a considerable sum. Whether you lodge in or out of the World it's a good idea, not to mention a time saver, to buy a cheap cooler and breakfast staples so that you can have breakfast in your hotel room.

Q. What's the best way to avoid the long lines?

For starters, try to visit during a slower time of year. Secondly, arrive before the park opens, admission in hand. Third, have a plan. The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World offers scientifically derived, field-tested touring plans for each of the theme parks that can save you 4 1/2 hours of standing in line on a day of average to high attendance! The research behind the touring plans has been the subject of features in the New York Times, the Dallas Morning News, and in numerous academic journals.

    Feel cheated

I was really excited to get the guidebook, but felt cheated that all the charts and helpful pages for touring were formatted wrong making them bigger than the nook page. You could only see the center of the lists and comparison charts. Lots of helpful informaion for a Disney Vacstion, but stick to the paperback until it's fixed or you will just be flustrated.

    Not formatted for Nook

The maps and pictures cannot be formatted. They get cutoff and appear about the words on the page. I have tried to view this in my Nook, Nook for PC and Nook for Android. Please fix the format as this is basically a waste on the Nook.

Just as good as the "real book"

The "must-have" companion for anyone that visits wdw.

For anyone that is having a problem with the maps....if you have the nook color or tablet (or any touchscreen device) double-tap the map or chart to zoom in and then use standard pinch-zoom and fingerslide to navigate. Enjoy!

Gotta get it before you hit the "World"!

Our family (2 adults, 4 children)has been to Disney a few times and on our last visit we took the advice from the book....it was the best trip yet!! We asked for a specific building at our resort, which they suggested for ease of buses, and it worked like a charm!! We also followed the touring plans and I swear we WALKED on to numerous rides, sometimes riding two times without even getting off!! We are going again next summer, so I wanted to start planning & checking for new suggestions. Last time we visited it was a slower time of year, but this time going in the busy season, I would NOT go without a plan & checking the book first! Excellent resource!!! Highly, highly recommend!!

    Nook version

Happy with the guide and the info, however the charts and diagrams are cut off. Keep in mind I am using the ipad app, so that could be it.

I was EXTREMELY disappointed in this guide book. This is my fir

I was EXTREMELY disappointed in this guide book. This is my first trip back to Disney World after 10 years. If I was a first timer I wouldn't go after reading this. There is a reason why it's called "unofficial". To TRASH Disney is unforgivable!!! Keep looking and avoid this guide book.

Content good but don't buy the nook version

The content is great & the book is filled with useful information. However, I wish I'd spent my money on the hard copy. The book is not formatted properly for the nook & pictures, charts, & graphs are cut off. The content in many would be extremely helpful but they're completely useless in this version since you can't see them. I'm incredibly disappointed over the loss of this content.

    Must have & read!!!

Last year I bought the 2011 version and loved it so much I had to buy the 2012. But this time I bought the E-book, personally I prefer having the good old fashion book so I can make notes and tab pages since it is really a reference book. You really get your monies worth because its like over 700 pages. I have the Ebook but am seriously considering getting the paperback as well. Great info!! love it!!

    Problems

The books was not formatted to fit the Nook nor iPad especially, when trying to look at graphs or maps. Poor design, they need to fix it first.

    Anxiously awaiting the updated version!

I used the Unofficial Guide to WDW for our 2009 and 2010 trips to WDW, and can honestly say this is the only book that I will be buying for our trip next year. The information is given from an upbiased perspective and is geared towards helping families of all types get the most out of their experiences in and around WDW. Their touring plans have proven themselves to me and help us have stress-free, fabulous days. I love their enthusiasm and sincere approach. I am sure this will be another well-read and studies book in my collection!

    Highly recommend!

There is tons of up to date info in this book. The Tour Planning Guide is extremely helpful. Learned that there is an app for your iphone on wait times for all the Disney rides! Provides info on other Orlando area parks too.

    Not eBook material

The content is great. I wish I had purchased a paper edition instead of the ebook. I ended up getting it from the library and it is much more enjoyable to leaf through. I prefer to jump around from section to section, hard to do with an ebook. Good content just get the paper book.

I bought the 2011 version of this book and I pretty much read it

I bought the 2011 version of this book and I pretty much read it front to back (ok I did skip the cruise part since I wasn't planning a cruise). I thoroughly enjoyed it because it gave visitor opinions on different topics whether it was good, bad or ugly! The touring plans are a god send! My mom and I were down in early August and we waited no longer than 15 minutes for any ride. This is also when the crowd levels are 8 or 9 out of 10. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who plans on visiting Disney in the near future! As a side note, anyone visiting Disney and going to Hollywood Studios, ya GOTTA rid Star Tours! By far the best ride down there!! :-D
