Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Cooking dishes from popular fantasy books—from Harry Potter to A Game of Thrones to the Twilight vampire tales—has become a pastime for fans seeking to immerse themselves in their favorite fictional worlds. Literary foodies are trading tips on how to cook eel pie and nettle soup, sharing ideas on blogs, YouTube and Twitter, and occasionally scoring cookbook deals. The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook, which came out last year, has sold more than 150,000 copies." —The Wall Street Journal

"The Harry Potter series is filled with all sorts of fantastic magic, but some of the most memorable moments are centered around the fantastic edibles that J. K. Rowling created. Lucky for all of us muggles, Dinah Buchholz has penned The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook, a guide to recreating all sorts of witchy and wizardy vittles introduced throughout the series." —Serious Eats

"With this cookbook, dining a la Hogwarts is as easy as Banoffi Pie. With more than 150 easy-to-make recipes, tips, and techniques, you can indulge in spellbindingly delicious meals drawn straight from the pages of your favorite Potter stories." —Maria's Space blog

"After a long winter's day, ever wish you could just cozy up in the Burrow and have Molly Weasley whip you up a little roast chicken with mashed potatoes? Now you can...with a bit of Muggle work. There are some delectable-sounding treats, including a lot of stick-to-your-ribs winter fare. It sure is fun cooking to these literary references. And if you have any plans to throw a Harry Potter theme party, this cookbook is a must-have." —GeekMom

"We love it!! In fact, we're such geeks, my husband and I planned our weekly date nights around this book. This book has everything Harry Potter. Not only does this cookbook have delicious recipes that make me feel like I'm in the Harry Potter story, but it cites each recipe from the book, so I know exactly where to imagine myself while eating these delicious treats. So...if you are geeky (like we are) and love good recipes (which we do), I highly recommend this cookbook!" —Pink Apron blog

    Highly Recommended

Beautifully designed from start to finish. I loved the references to the book; where the recipes were taken from. Everything my family and I have had so far is out of this world! Bought some as gifts for family members(young and old) that love Harry Potter & cooking.

    Great for geek chefs!

As a casual fan of the Harry Potter series (with many fanatic friends) and an avid cook, trying out this book was a no-brainer. Gotta love when you can infuse something fun like wizardry into every day hobbies.

And, as a bonus, the recipes feature a lot of traditional British flair. I guess no one really gets excited about English food (I avoided it after an unsuccessful try at Branston pickle), but it's worth a try, no matter how unexciting things like "treacle" sounds. For the record, it's kind of like molasses. Whodathunk?

I tried making pancakes first and was baffled when the book told me to add lemon to milk and let it sit on the counter until it thickened. Why would I want to do that? Does it make it curdle, and wouldn't that be gross? I forcibly turned off my chef sensibilities and gave it a shot, and you know, the pancakes turned out awesome. I don't know what else I could do with that treatment of milk, but now I'm determined to experiment with it.

I would highly suggest this book to any fellow geek chefs. I can't wait to have a wizard-themed dinner party with the bigger Harry Potter fans in my social circle.

    Disenchanting

I was expecting more recipies directly from the books like butter beer and chocolate frogs. Instead I got a book full of recipies from the UK and their histories. While semi-interesting, I probably wouldn't have bought the book if I were in a store.

We had 5 grandkids over for a Harry Potter themed 4 day visit.

We had 5 grandkids over for a Harry Potter themed 4 day visit. I made Butterbeer (got the recipe from the internet), I loved it but the kids not so much. I cooked several recipies from the cookbook. Kids loved the Pumpkin Juice. I thought the Shepherd's Pie was the best I ever made. The Treacle Tart was a favorite of 2 kids. The filling for the Cornish Pasties was delicious. I didn't use the pie crust in the book or the one I usually make (bad decision). Made the Goulash and Chicken and Mushroom Pie (used my pie crust recipe) after the kids left. I didn't get to make all the dishes I wanted, just ran out of time with the kids.
I love the way Dinah incorporates the dishes with a Harry Potter background. I'm buying this book for 3 of my daughters' in law. I recommend this book for any Potter fan.

Extremely entertaining and informative. Tells about the foods as well as how to make them. Also informs where the food is mentioned in the book. However, if you are looking for a quick and easy meal, this book is not it. The recipes are harder to make than others.

Great book! LOVE Bannofi Pie and Cauldron Cakes. Could be more vegitarian recipes, though. I am going to try the Peppermint Humbugs next, but first I have to get a candy thermometer. Be warned: there is no recipient for Butter beer.

Interesting recipes along with the history of the dishes and how they
got to England. Unfortunately most of the recipes are very high in better and heavy cream. Fun book to have even if you don'[t make the dishes.
