Overview

"What must it be like, I wonder, to live in a world where food appears at the press of a button? How would I spend the hours I now commit to combing the woods for sustenance if it were so easy to come by?" - Katniss Everdeen

The Hunger Games trilogy captivates its audience through a storyline dominated by the quest for food, with the vast culinary disparity between the impoverished districts and the opulent Capitol taking center stage. Food is both a weapon and an act of love, and-as in today's world-it is essential to survival. Fortunately, most of us inhabit a more prosperous world than the tributes, one where food can appear with the press of a button or two.

The struggles of Katniss and the people ruled by the Capitol have spilled into the Unofficial Recipes of the Hunger Games. For many of us, the stories may have ended, but the books and characters are still very much alive, leaving fans craving more. What better way to satisfy that craving than by preparing some dishes from the book? The cook book follows the chronological order of the Hunger Games series, keeping the dishes as realistic as possible, making us feel like we’re in the world of Katniss all over again. The people of District 12 have simple recipes of soups, hardy breads, and salads that use ingredients reminiscent of pioneer days – grains, goat milk and cheese, rustic breads, fresh herbs and nuts – while those from the Capitol enjoy decadent desserts and basted meats. While some recipes seem less likely to create, requiring squirrel in the recipe, they are still enjoyable to read about and sound no less tasty. Other recipes, like the salad with bacon dressing or the Thick and Creamy Carrot Soup, are so simple and mouth-watering you’d describe the work as a “piece of cake.” A fun read with fun food make this book good enough to drool on the pages.

The Unofficial Recipes of the Hunger Games was a fascinating cookbook. The recipes are well written and very easy to follow, which is wonderful. The book is also well categorized by the three books so that way you don’t get confused by where each recipe is located for each book. The descriptions above each recipe of where in the Hunger Games this food was mentioned or the symbolic meaning behind each recipe was a great addition. And as for the people who are devoted completely to the series, they will get more insight into their favorite characters. I have no doubt in my mind that any devoted fan of the Hunger Games trilogy would enjoy this cookbook and its recipes!
