Overview

Succeeding where the reclusive Lauryn Hill failed in a 2002 effort, Grammy winner Alicia Keys is the perfect performer to relaunch MTV's vaunted Unplugged series. She's a musician with impressive singing and compositional gifts that are even better appreciated in a live setting --particularly one as intimate as the vibe found here. Backed by a full band complete with horn and string sections and soulful background singers, Keys shines with a stage presence that's alternately warm and coy; think Aretha Franklin circa 1972. The New York native imbues whatever she touches with heartfelt vulnerability, be it a nod to Gladys Knight on a subtle, saxophone-accompanied version of "If I Was Your Woman," or her spirited, Stevie Wonder–reminiscent piano playing on the hit "If I Ain't Got You." Fans will be pleased that Keys reaches back to her breakthrough debut, Songs in A Minor, and delivers a lush reading of "Fallin' " caressed by restrained orchestration, plus a reworked, gospel-kissed Prince nugget rechristened "How Come You Don't Call Me." Keys's range is impressive, and while her duet with Maroon 5's Adam Levine on the Rolling Stones classic "Wild Horses" is fairly boilerplate, her collaborations with Mos Def, Common, and others on the curtain-closing jam, "Love It or Leave It Alone," show why Alicia Keys is the new queen of hip-hop soul. Sorry, Mary J.

I went to the taping of this MTV unplugged in July and the energy was unreal. Purely magical and quite amazing. Alicia is the answer to the question that we all have begged for. Her classic collabo with Adam Levine is amazing- the Rolling Stones remake, "Wild Horses" has never sounded so beautiful. Another quiet banger is "Stolen Moments," which is aptly taken from her book, "Tears for Water." It is amazing to read the human word and then see how it is transformed into song. Then of course you have to give it up for the collabo's at the end with the Mighty Mos Def, Common, and Damion Marley. Throughout the show I honestly had to pinch myself because I couldn't believe that I was witnessing a pure legend in the making. I have heard the CD and can't stop raving about the idea that music in its pure, organic form (no synthesizers or any of that other jazz)) can truly show the strength of an artist. Unplugged was made for artist like Alicia .. and I for one am quite ecstatic that she brought it back.. So.. go cop the CD!!!

Many of the tracks were from previous CDs but have been reworked. Alicia has impeccable taste in her choice of music and this is her very best CD

I love Alicia Keys more than any other musical artist. I have posters of her on my wall, I've seen her live, own all of her CDs, and know every word to just about every one of her songs. She's beautiful and talented, and both of which are heard on this CD. All of her previous hits are done in an outstanding manner--her performance of "How Come You Don't Call Me" sent chills down my spine. Her new songs are hot--I love "Stolen Moments" and "Streets of New York". There are plenty of surprises as well--the remix to "Welcome to Jamrock" was hot. I thoroughly enjoy this CD, and I hope others go out and buy it so they can too.
