Overview

Since coming to Crossroads, Oklahoma, former outcast Aden Stone has been living the good life. Never mind that one of his best friends is a werewolf, his girlfriend is a vampire princess who hungers for his blood, and he's supposed to be crowned Vampire King—while still a human! Well, kind of.

With four—oops, three now—human souls living inside his head, Aden has always been "different" himself. These souls can time-travel, raise the dead, possess another's mind and, his least favorite these days, tell the future.

The forecast for Aden? A knife through the heart.

Because a war is brewing between the creatures of the dark, and Aden is somehow at the center of it all. But he isn't about to lie down and accept his destiny without a fight. Not when his new friends have his back, not when Victoria has risked her own future to be with him, and not when he has a reason to live for the first time in his life….

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In the second installment of Showalter's Intertwined series, Aden and Mary Ann continue their breathless adventures in a world where, as Aden puts it, all myths are true. Aden has unexpectedly succeeded to the throne of the vampires, which only his vampire girlfriend Victoria seems willing to accept. It's enough to make every fairy in the vicinity want to kill Aden, in fact, despite fairies' natural propensity to protect humans. Meanwhile, Mary Ann is developing confidence in her relationship with werewolf Riley, but a pall is cast over their romance by a witches' death curse scheduled to manifest in five days. These are the simple problems. Showalter layers on complexities, and readers may feel frustrated as she attempts to recap the entire first book while simultaneously launching the next stage of the manifold plot. The frenetic tempo eventually settles, and though readers may have lingering questions about some aspects of the world Showalter constructs, the narrative develops clarity and romantic tension. But not closure: there is, inevitably, a further installment to come. Ages 13–up. (Sept.)
VOYA
Aden, the supernaturally gifted hero from Showalter's Intertwined (Harlequin Teen, 2009), returns, along with his vampiric girlfriend, Victoria, and best friend, Mary Anne. Aden, whose adventures in the previous novel left him the prospective king of the vampires, has lost one of the souls that inhabit his head, but the other three are still going strong. They give him a little warning when a fey attacks Aden, intent on killing him to stop a vampire invasion of the fey lands. The adventure does not stop there. Aden and his friends must thwart the fey, make sense of vampire politics and ward off the death curse of a witches' coven. The characters are charming (if a bit stock), the action is quick and the world is interesting. Nothing is groundbreaking, but those looking for another supernatural romance will find one here. It helps to read the first book, but the relationships are easy to decipher without previous knowledge. An easy choice for schools or public libraries where the first book is popular. Reviewer: Brenna Shanks
School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Aden Stone's story begins just where it left off in Intertwined (Harlequin Teen, 2009). Aden has become the new ruler of the vampires, and he's not quite sure he's up to the task. But first and foremost, he has to find the location of the witches' meeting in order to break the death curse on him and his friends. Then he can deal with the challenges that come with being a king. He also has to mind the three souls still living inside his head, one of which has predicted his imminent death, while trying to be a normal teen. Meanwhile, his friend Mary Ann Gray has troubles of her own. While she's learned that she mutes the abilities of others, she also discovers that it may not be her only gift. As supernatural creatures begin acting stranger and stranger around her, she starts to wonder what she really is. At times the plot becomes a bit convoluted because of the many subplots. Each character seems to have specific abilities tailor-made to help them out of perilous situations. Regardless, the story remains action-packed and hard to put down. Despite the characters' supernatural abilities, teens will find themselves identifying with one or more of them as they all struggle with bravery, relationships, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging.—Kimberly Castle, Medina County District Library, OH
Kirkus Reviews

At the end of Intertwined (2009), Aden Stone, who plays host to three dead-raising, future-predicting and body-snatching souls, was named king of the vampires and negotiated an uneasy truce among the many supernatural creatures—fairies, vampires, witches, werewolves and goblins—he and his resident souls attracted to Crossroads, Okla. Readers entranced by Aden and his Scooby Gang of friends will be eager to return to their world, but this follow-up is a plotting disappointment. Showalter's surfeit of narrative threads—a witches' curse, interspecies romances (human—or is she?—Mary Ann/werewolf Riley and Aden/vampire princess Victoria), Mary Ann's horrifying realization that she is a Drainer of supernatural powers, Aden's continuing education about vampire culture, former vampire king Vlad's secret recovery and yet another potential war among witches, fairies and vampires—never quite weave together. Instead, the threads remain discrete and dull, as the plot plods along with far less heart-thumping action than in the first book. There is more genuine sexual heat here, though both couples refrain from fully consummating their relationships. Essential only where the first book was popular.(Paranormal romance. YA)

Great concepts, but there's just too much happening at once

A lot happened to Aden in the first novel, and when this second story begins, he's suffering from the after-effects of bites from two different vampires, and his symptoms include seeing the world through both their eyes (well, through one of them's ears, since he's already dead). Also, "Aden shared his head with three other human souls. More than that, each soul possessed a supernatural ability. Julian could raise the dead. Caleb could possess other bodies. And Elijah could predict the future" (pg 9). Aden used to have a fourth power tied to the fourth soul he carried around, a lady-soul who could take him time-traveling. This lost soul was the deceased mother of Aden's friend Mary Ann. Mary Ann's special power is dampening paranormal abilities, and she's dating Riley, the werewolf bodyguard of Aden's vampire princess girlfriend Victoria. Victoria's dad was Vlad the Impaler, whom Aden killed in book one, making him the de facto leader of the vampires, even though he's still human.

The recaps present the information in a very understandable way, which was helpful. I wasn't ever really confused while reading, but I was very overwhelmed at times.
Some examples of where I was overwhelmed with all the details :
-Victoria can hypnotize people, has the power of teleportation, and is also possessed by a sort of demonic beast.
-Aden is taken to Fairy Tale, the Fae dimension, and attacked by a Victoria-hating fairy who later becomes a vengeful fairy ghost.
-Tucker, Mary Ann's half-demon ex-boyfriend (who got her best friend Penny pregnant) shows up and may be involved in some shady paranormal dealings.
-The vampires are threatened by fairies, goblins, and witches, and Mary Ann, Riley, Victoria and Aden are under a death spell that will kill them all if they don't meet with the witches within five days.

Then there are some logical problems:
-Vlad is dead, but the vamps decide to let his body sit around for two full weeks, so they can be certain he won't rise. But no one wants him back, so it seems like the best way to make sure he won't rise is to just incinerate the remains.
-Mary Ann's power-dampening abilty only seems to be effective at random intervals, because she can't stop Riley from turning into a wolf or stop Victoria from hypnotizing, teleporting, or drinking blood.

There are good parts, of course. 1. Aden and Mary Ann are both very concerned with doing the right thing and protecting those they love. 2. It's wonderufl to see a strong platonic friendship between a girl and a guy in YA, and Aden and Mary Ann carry it off very well. 3. Mary Ann learns self-defense and trains herself so that she can keep up with her supernatural friends and not be a liability. 4. Both couples are sweet and go out of their way to show their genuine affection. The story has a solid, entertaining core, but the embellishments are overwhelming.

    Awesome Read!

When I finished reading the first book, Intertwined, in March, I was soo upset that it had ended; and I kept looking online every week for the next one. When I finally saw that this one was going to be released in August, I couldn't wait for August to come around soon enough. I pre-ordered it & read it in 5 days! (I do work, so I was reading on my way to & from work on my way home); I just could not put it down. The story flowed nicely from the first book, and there are more events that occur that just makes the relationship between Aden & Victoria, & Riley & Mary Ann even more connected with each other! The best part is that there's going to be a 3rd book!!! The depressing part - we all have to wait an entire year!!! That is torture! Honestly, I think this series would make a great movie; I'd love to see them made into movies. =D

I didn't realize that this was a series so I never read the first book. At the begining of Unraveled it was hard to follow because I never read the first book but I caught on quickly. This book kept me interested and I couldn't put it down. I am going to get 1 & 3. This is a must read.

review taken from One Book At A Time

I'm beginning to think I need to eat my words when I say that the second book usually disappoints. As of late, that has so not been the case. After reading Intertwined, I might not have read Unraveled had it not been for that fact that I won a copy of it. I would have missed an excellent addition to a series I will be continuing!

Poor Aden! All he wants to do is have a normal life, attend high school, etc. But, now he's the king of the vampires. He has to make decision regarding blood-slaves, challenges, and finding a Queen. It was not surprising no one would accept that all he wanted was Victoria. Not to mention he has to deal with the witches. His abilities are really starting to come through, and I find him a really interesting character. It's no wonder everybody wants a piece of him. Speaking of Victoria, I liked learning more about her and why she is the way she is. She seems more like a person now and not just a character throw into the story.
I LOVED Mary Anne and Riley in this story. Their romance is sweet and sometimes raw and emotional. I like the new development of what Mary Anne really is. I also really loved how that didn't matter to Riley. I wonder how much trouble he will be in for what he has done to protect her. It should make for some interesting subject matter in the next installment.

I also enjoyed the involvement of the witches and the fae in this one. I love it when a story twists how you normally think of a mythical creature (although the fae weren't that different). I did think the ending with the witches was really anti-climatic. It was way to abrupt, but I guess the author felt there were more pressing matters at hand. I really enjoyed the ending. It was not I was expecting! I can't wait for the next one!

    Good!

I am a 14 year-old girl and I loved this book! Hunky werewolves and vampires, girl-power, fairies, and witches? What more could a girl ask for in a book! (Cute demon 'pets' maybe?) Of course, Gena manages to include all of these wonderful things in her newest installment, 'Unraveled' in her Intertwined series. Haden Stone, otherwise known as Aden has 3 souls in his head, a hot vampire girlfriend, a best friend who is dating a werewolf and is king of the vampires. He's not exactly a normal teen. In this fast paced book, Aden needs to find the witches who have placed a death curse on his friends, and deal with being king of the vamps. Oh, and lets not forget about how he and his guard Riley (werewolf) killed the prince of the fairies. Will Aden meet the witches deadline for a meeting and break the curse? Will he gain the respect of all his vampire subjects? Cover up the murder of the fairy prince well enough? Read and find out!

    Good

This book was a disappointment for me. I really expected more. I love Gena Showalter. So when I finally got to read this, it did not do what I expected it to do.

Ayden is faced with becoming a king. And with that, comes the territory of followers, friends, and so many other kingly duties he must attend, all the while he must do school and fight for his crown. Ayden is faced with girl drama, as well as fighting to keep his secret safe.

This book was told from several different points of views. We have Ayden with all the souls trapped in his head, Mary Ann, Tucker, Riley, and Victoria. One thing I enjoy is the souls. They always bring a smile to my face and I love to hear about their past as well. Here we once again got to see in Caleb's past and how he is connected with Ayden.

The girl drama. Now that he is king, Ayden must date other girls or else there will be an uprising. Ayden reluctantly agrees. But what got me was how insecure Victoria was. No matter how many times, Ayden said he loved her, she still needed reassurance. I can understand the stress that she was under, but putting more stress on Ayden only made him weaker.

The ending was no surprise. I had a feeling as what would happen and well, it did. I can only hope that they next book would pick up the pace and bring me some action.

    Sooooooo good!

Gena Showalter has done it again! There is not a single book by her that I haven't loved and this series is def at the top of that list. There's always so much excitement in this series, especially this book. The first book, Intertwined, was great but Unraveled is even better! If your an adult and a fan of Gena's, don't skip this book just because its in the "young adult" section. Those are some of the best books/series I've ever read and I'm 28 yrs old. And if you've read Intertwined but thought it was just ok, still read this one. It takes Intertwined to new and far more exciting places. Don't skip this book!!!
