Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Agatha-finalist Sefton's warm ninth knitting mystery (after 2010's Skein of the Crime) finds Fort Collins, Colo., financial consultant Kelly Flynn turning for emotional support to her friends after breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, Steve Townsend. One friend, realtor Jennifer Stroud, invites her to meet a new real estate client, Fred Turner, but when Kelly and Jen arrive at Fred's cabin on his ranch property, they discover him dead on the floor, an antique pistol by his side. The deceased, a homicide victim rather than a suicide as initially thought, had plenty of enemies, including a client of Kelly's. Kelly begins a search for the history of the gun in an effort to prove her client innocent. While details of Kelly's personal life, including chats with her knitting group at the House of Lambspun, slow the action early on, the pace picks up and leads to a surprising conclusion. Vivid descriptions of Colorado in early spring and credible characters are a plus. (June)

The Lambspun regulars (Skein of the Crime) tackle a real estate case in this popular Colorado-set series.
Kirkus Reviews

An unscrupulous Colorado real-estate developer pushes his luck one deal too far.

Dumped by longtime boyfriend Steve Townsend, CPA Kelly Flynn (Skein of the Crime, 2010, etc.) still has a lot to console her. Next door to her cozy cottage in Fort Connor is Lambspun, where cascades of soft multicolored yarn await her eager fingers. Surrogate moms Mimi Shafer and Jayleen Swinson offer a warm shoulder. Pals Lisa and Jennifer are on hand to distract her with pizza and beer, while Megan and Marty bubble with wedding plans. Now that her Denver client, Arthur Housemann, wants more and more of her time, her Cherry Creek house is perfect for hot-tub sleepovers. Too bad that Houseman covets a piece of Poudre Canyon property so much that he's willing to cut a deal with sleazy Fred Turner, who's already burned Houseman once. Sure enough, a counteroffer by a mysterious Brit named Birmingham threatens to scuttle Houseman's dream house. Next thing you know, Kelly and Jen find Turner dead. So Kelly, recruited to play volleyball on real estate hotshot Dave Germaine's team, takes time off from eying Steve warily across the net to try to discover who bought the World War II Mauser that blasted Turner to his well-deserved last reward.

Sefton's Rocky Mountain version ofSex and the Cityis short on the sex but features major chumminess for fans of 20-something volleyball bonding.

Colorful Colorado, cozy mystery, and a corpse no one will mourn!

A bit of fun, romance, history, relaxation, underhandedness, and a corpse no one will miss! This is #9 of the Knitting series, but to be fair in my review I have little knowledge of what has gone before. Just the same, I feel attuned to the book. I delighted in the association of the colors of the yarns and the colors of the landscapes of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the location for the series. The story is centered around a mixed group of friends, all ages, male and female, with several interests in common. Added to the mix, an author of Western History has come to town as Curt's house guest and the whole group immediately takes to him. These friends sound wonderful, I would love to meet them in person. Maggie Sefton brings her characters alive with their speech, a trick of emphasis that I could hear quite plainly in my mind. The hub of vocal action is Lambspun, a yarn and knitting shop with a room where friends can gather, knitting and chatting, with a convenient café attached to the shop. Though most of these friends are knitters, they enjoy each others company in sports, barbecues, and sharing moments good or bad, in a complete group or just two or three. Kelly Flynn, the group's amateur sleuth, is trying to deal with her heartbreak over ex-boyfriend Steve, who walked out on her in #8 "Skein of the Crime." In #9, the current book, their friends are trying to get them back together. Steve lives in Denver, and sometimes manages to come to town to visit with some of them. In Unraveled, Kelly is deep into her work as CPA for Arthur Housemann, a land developer/investor. She often stays in Denver rather than commuting if she is needed again the next day. She is, in essence, hiding out from her anger and hurt because of Steve by throwing herself into her work. The recession has hit the community of Fort Connor hard, as it has elsewhere, so when real estate agent Jennifer gets a client for a large piece of ranchland, she is excited to find that the client is none other than Kelly's boss. A cinch of a sale, since he is offering full price, or is it? The property owner has made a fortune out of being dishonest and tough. When Jennifer races to present her offer, hearing there is another offer being submitted that would defeat any other presented, she and Kelly see a truck pull out of the driveway and come barreling down the road toward them. When they pull into the driveway, Jen goes in and suddenly yells for Kelly. She has found the owner all right, but he's dead. It appears to be a suicide, but why now? This book has a different approach from some cozies, the corpse doesn't come into the story right at the beginning. Characters are all fleshed out and continuity is primary in the early part of the book. In the remainder of the book, the discovery of the corpse takes us in a different direction. Kelly has her own trigger for going into sleuthing mode. She gets a kind of buzzing that grows more insistent if ignored. She has already been alerted by that buzzing that this is more than a suicide, and launches into her own investigation. With two prime suspects, it is an interesting journey to reach a final conclusion. I enjoyed the book and its nuances. Definitely a lighter read in many places, the camaraderie is a pleasant set-up for the mystery to come. I look forward to the next book to learn the fate of Kelly and Steve. As a bonus at the end of the book there is a knitting pattern and a recipe.

    a wonderful whodunit

In Fort Collins, Colorado, financial consultant Kelly Flynn breaks up with her boyfriend Steve Townsend. Heartbroken that her long time relationship ended, she turns to her House of Lambspun knitting friends for solace. Realtor Jennifer Stroud invites Kelly to meet her new client, Fred Turner, which she agrees to do.

The females travel to Fred's cabin on his ranch. There they find him lying on his floor dead; near his body is an antique pistol. Although the initial inclination is suicide, the police determine a homicide occurred. Apparently Fred had many people with a variety of motives to want him dead. Meanwhile Kelly investigates the ownership history of the weapon to prove one of her clients with a grudge towards the victim is innocent.

This Lambspun knitting amateur sleuth mystery (see Dropped Dead Stitch and Skein of the Crime) is a wonderful whodunit with a fabulous final twist. The cast is terrific and brings plausibility to the investigation although that is two edged as their early chatter keeps the story line from accelerating. Once the plot shifts into first gear (after a few chapters), Unraveled never looks back until the stunning climax.

    Kelly's Never Unraveled!

If you're a fan of this series, you'll enjoy this entry as much as all that come before it. All the beloved knitters make an appearance in this tapestry of mystery. Kelly's analytical brain stitches together all the clues, while Burt passes her swatches of info and insight on to the police. Even Steve, whom loyal readers thought was a dropped stitch, gets woven into the fabric of this novel. Looking forward to the next yarn!

    Sophomoric, Unfortunately

I like reading mystery series type literature. This series seemed different so I picked it up and began. After the first few books, I found the minutiae of each character's day almost unbearable..."Kelly holds out her mug for some of the dark brew..." "Mother Mimi" comforts (insert name of character here). I found the characters corny and stereotypical. Stories also became predictable. I really wanted to like this series. One good thing it did was to get me knitting again.

Being the type of reader that I am, I had to finish the series right up until the last book. Next time I'll give myself permission to quit much earlier than that.

Sorry I cannot recommend this series for those seasoned readers out there. Maybe better for young adults.

    not recommended

I did not enjoy this book....i'm glad i didn't purchase this book...i borrowed it from the library

one positive note....i enjoyed the banter between the main character and her ex.....good romance and it left you hanging to see if they get back together in the future

but the banter and conversations between the main character and all her friends while just sitting around food is just "mind numbing" and goes on far too long....I had to skip all this just to get to the story which really was not very good and very predictable
