Joey W. Hll is in arguably the queen of erotic romance. Her latest book, Unrestrained is nothing less than impressive. Hill's characters are strong willed and very comfortable in their own skins. They know what they want and how to get it. This novel focuses on the idea of submission and mastery in a way that readers of the genre may not have experienced before. The tables turn for main character Athena when she meets a new Dom, Dale. She goes from being a mistress to being a sub who is exploring her own inner desires. A great spin-off from Hill's Knights of the Boardroom series!

    What I liked:

Athena is a very capable woman. She knows how to accomplish things in her career and her life. She spent a wonderful marriage with a husband whose needs she lovingly accommodated, as his wife and as his mistress. She is well known in the BDSM community in that role, even after Roy succumbed to cancer three years ago. But now that he's gone she can't seem to adjust to taking on a new sub. When she meets master Dale, she begins to realize her inner desires to flip the script and explore her submissive side. I loved the fact that Hill allows Athena to learn about her own needs in this book. She isn't giving in to someone else or even giving up her control. She is in the drivers seat here all the way. She is just letting Dale guide her where she wants to go. A great character!

Dale is quite the Dom. A former Navy SEAL, and it is not conceivable that he would not be dominant. But there are so many other things about him that not what the reader would expect. He is a gardener, he rescues animals and he operates a junk yard. LOL...he's definitely an interesting guy. He has a softer side, but he needs that extra punch when it comes to his sex life. His drives are strong and unrelenting in his life and his bed. I thought he was a perfect match for Athena. She can be dominant but she doesn't need to be. He is dominant but he can be soft as well. Great counterparts!

    What I didn't like:

Club settings are common for BDSM books. They are places where doms and subs can meet and explore in a public venue. Club Surreal is a typical club of this kind. Sometimes I wish the setting could be a bit more diverse. It's that... "you've read about one club, you've read about them all" idea. You have a lot of clubs, resorts and that sort of thing in this kind of book, that I wish we could sometimes get away from. Certainly not a deal breaker though, this book was top notch all the way.

    Bottom Line:

This book was exceptional. Joey W. Hill knows how to write erotic romance. Her characters are diverse and different. I liked the fact that they weren't young pups, so to speak and the fact that they were real people who needed a little something more when it came to the bedroom. Not all of us are able to explore our fantasies in this way, but reading Hill's writing, definitely hits the spot.

First Impression ...That cover is so gorgeous. I've heard great things about Hill's books.

The Story... Two years after the death of her husband, Athena is searching. Serving as a Domme to her husband, now the role doesn't seem to fit. As she slowly wades back in to the BDSM lifestyle she and her husband enjoyed, Athena is changed when she sees a dynamic Dom, Dale, in a scene. Athena is drawn to him, as a submissive. A highly respected Domme, this change within Athena is a struggle. How can she reconcile her past with her needs for the future? With Dale's care, she is willing to explore the life of a submissive, move forward from her past role, and find a new way with her Master.

The Characters ... Honestly, the characters made Unrestrained. I've often mentioned that I find the world of BDSM and all the different roles and dynamics within that life to be fascinating. What drew me to this story was Athena's shift from Domme to submissive, and how thoroughly the author examined the desires and emotions and thoughts that result from the switch. I have to admit, I will not be able to give Athena's journey it's due. It would require a very lengthy review with more knowledge than I have. Hers was a complicated, thoughtful and ultimately freeing change. It was truly fascinating.

Dale, her Master, friend, and lover, was a complex and fascinating character as well. A retired SEAL, he hasn't let the partial amputation that changed his world, change him. He was a self-assured and powerful character. His pleasure is hers, and his complete control and care for Athena was inspiring. Though Dale was commanding, he wasn't an unlikable character like many Doms I've found in books. It was always apparent that his ultimate goal was Athena's happiness, which in turn brings his own.

The Writing ... The writing in Unrestrained fully immersed me into Athena's life, thoughts and desires. Though I own a few, this is the first of Hill's books I've read. I'm no expert on the subject of BDSM, but I feel as if Hill is, or at least an expert of depicting the life. I appreciate how thoroughly the characters are examined, how multi-faceted they were, and that the story was thoughtful, and not just out to shock and awe.

My one and only complaint: Dale's use of the word "girl" when talking to or directing Athena.
The Heat ...Was plentiful and delicious. Dale and Athena were uninhibited and honest in the wants, needs, and reactions to one another. With their having the type of relationship they did, the physical picked up almost immediately, but only enhanced the relationship and help progress it, rather than take it over. Unfortunately, I "had" to read much of Unrestrained in a semi-public setting. It was wicked hot and I had a few Awwwwkward moments. Fortunately, I love awkward.

Could I Put Unrestrained Down? The opening was intriguing, very much so, and quick to pull me on board. Though I never struggled with the story, it did have a bit of a slower pace and I found that my mind would wander at points. I do think the pace was necessary, but it did allow me to drift. The fascinating characters and subject always managed pulled me back.

In the End... At this point, it is a bit redundant for me to say that I found Unrestrained to be extremely fascinating. But it's honestly an absolute fact. Unrestrained appealed to me on a cerebral level, but also emotionally and physically. It was an excellent experience and I am so glad I gave Athena and Dale's book a chance.

Joey W Hill has done it again! She is the undisputed Mistress of the BDSM romance genre. Her characters are always fully developed, multi-dimensional people, with relatable, believable story lines. If this is your first time reading a Joey W Hill novel, you will not be disappointed.
Such a beautiful love story. I think what I loved most about it was it's, (and I DON'T mean this in a bad way) simplicity.
2 middle-aged people fall in Love.
No major dramas, no car chases, no subterfuge, no games, just that journey 2 people take when their hearts recognize their soul mate. Athena's self-discovery, Dale's absolute Mastery....sigh.....
He's such a compelling character. You immediately sense that his Domination, his absolute ability as a Master, isn't just bone deep, but a part of his DNA. As I first started reading their story I was struck by how little internal dialog we had from Dale's perspective. But once I finished reading I realized it wasn't necessary. Dale's thoughts, feelings were already there in every encounter he had with Athena. Honest, straightforward, absolute. Dale is every noble ideal we have of what a Knight is. I LOVE him!
Watching Athena embrace ALL of her submissive feelings, as well as watching her struggle to reconcile who she was with Roy and who she was always meant to be added so much to their journey. So many of us live our lives like Athena had. Especially when we have no outlet for what our submission really means to us. We serve, we're the caretakers, the organizers....we put everyone elses needs before our own. For most of us, that's enough. But how much more wonderful could our lives be if we grab hold of the fantasy as Athena did and make it our reality.

The encounters between Dale and Athena are incredibly Hot and Steamy!! Dale's ability to build Athena's need for release and the creative ways he achieves that are mind blowing. This is a Master fully in control of Athena's desire. A Love story definitely worth experiencing!

I am as they say a newbie Joey W. Hill fan. This is my first boo

I am as they say a newbie Joey W. Hill fan. This is my first book and I am so glad, it was amazing! I loved that the characters, Dale and Athena were middle aged. I don't particularly care about age most of the time, but when they are older, it is a special treat! The premise of this book piqued my curiosity. Happily married woman of many years, who was a Domme for her husband, who is now a widow and decides to go in a different direction with the rest of her life. The story is so much more involved. Dale is a Navy Seal, who is dominant, authoritative, demanding, exacting, methodical, insightful and fiercely devoted to those he loves. And, as Joey describes him "English Leather and Big Red. One hundred percent testosterone, all the way. .....and the gods that designed that riveting deep timbre had intended one primary use for it. Issuing commands."

The struggles they go through to find the balance in their relationship and to give Athena time to grow into her new role as a sub and in particular a sub for Dale surface all their idiosyncrasies and insecurities. In addition to dealing with the loss of her husband and how that loss changed her in the process, she is also adjusting to how Dale in turn is changing her. It is just amazing to watch the transformations. And HOW these transformations occur in the form of discipline and off the chart sex scenes will make you melt!

One of the things I fell in love with as a new reader to Joey Hill, is her ability to make you feel like you are there and you become the character through touch and feel. She describes in one chapter "her toes curled into the rug, the rougher fibers a contrast with the silk of her nylons." "She fingered the stripes on the sleeve, felt the faint scratch of the wool against her skin." Every reader knows the feel of these things. I love when a writer does that! It brings you there with the character, bonds you with them. Joey Hill is a master at this.

I cried at the end of the book to read how Athena sees caring for her husband and how we care for those we love whether they are alive or in the struggles of leaving this earth. As an older reader, I have had friends and family die and watched friends lose spouses--Joey Hill captures the heartache, devotion, caring and love that is involved with these processes beautifully.

She truly has a gift of weaving not only a beautiful love story, sexually charged love scenes, but weaves their character flaws and strengths in such a way that you fall in love with them yourself. I miss Dale and Athena already!

What a beautifully written book. It kept me on edge the whole time. Not knowing what they would do next was very exciting. I do like that the author stuck to the story line and did not skip around that much. I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

I really liked the part where Athena is showing Dale her house and you can just tell that he is contemplating in his head what he can do to her in each area of the house. I love that Athena shows her wild side when they are alone and her softer side of wanting to take care of him when they are not. Dale shows his dominant side but also has a very sensitive side after all is said and done. This is a book that can be read more than once.

Unrestrained is not about the following: A Dom who is in his mid twenties, a billionaire ,
has a perfect body without any flaws at all ,has been a Dom since he learned to walk and can read his subs
mind and never needs her to communicate with him. It is not about a submissive who is in her early 20's, has
a beautifully unmarked body, has a tragic history of abuse or mistreatment by her family and partners in the
past and is desperate to find her one true Dom. What Unrestrained is about is two very realistic and wonderful
individuals who have strengths and weaknesses that are very human and believable. A Navy SEAL named
Dale who is retired after serving for his country and left the service with a prosthetic where his left lower leg
used to be. Who runs a dog shelter and junkyard and spends his time volunteering with kids from the wrong
side of the tracks to teach them about not having to run the streets and steal to get ahead in life. He meets
Athena who lost her husband of 20 years to cancer years earlier. Athena is a Domme in the club they both
belong to and has been unable to re-engage in the scene due to grief over her loss of her husband, who
was also her sub, and missing him in her day to day activities. That is until she meets Dale. With Dale she
learns who she is truly and allows the mask to come off and commit to being who she really is. These are
two mature characters who aren't perfect, make mistakes, have arguments and have to communicate to
figure out what they both truly want. In short I loved this story due to how realistic it was written and how
Ms Hill allowed us in on the communication and negotiation process. No mind reading tricks.
    Beautifully told.

If you have not read a BDSM romance yet but you are curious this

If you have not read a BDSM romance yet but you are curious this is a perfect first one to read.
I felt like Joey W. Hill was giving us a step by step guide to BDSM D/s lifestyle by allowing us to take this journey with
Athena as she learns her submissive side after the death of her husband Roy who she played the Domme to his submissive.

After his death Athena feels lost and unsure where she belongs in the D/s world. Until she meets Dale who helps her to find
her submissive nature and learn to love herself and her desires. Athena has a very strong personality and I found her to be an
excellent heroine. She is a beautiful business woman who deals with her husbands death and the grief she feels with southern grace.

When she meets Dale he just captures her heart and soul from the first moment she sees him even if she doesn't realize it at first.
Athena's need to control but by doing things to make everyone else but herself happy stops her from being able to live comfortably
with her submissive tenancies. Dale is there with a firm hand and controlled voice to help her in this new life. He is an accomplish
dominant as well as a Master Chief Retired Navy SEAL. All of his experience is just what Athena needs to put her on the path to moving
on from her past and her Domme lifestyle with her husband to a new world as Dale's submissive.

I have read the other books in the Knights of the Boardroom series and loved them. We first met Dale in Willing Sacrifice as
Max's SEAL buddy. I didn't realize I would like him so much. Though Dale's character appeared in Willing Sacrifice this booking
can be read as stand alone I do recommend the other books. Joey W. Hill's writing in this genre is just so full and genuine.
I can't put these books down.

The way Ms. Hill portrays Dale as he teaches Athena to accept her submissive side and learn how to live again in a whole new
way through D/s is just a beautiful journey for both of them. I loved being a part of it.

I just love the way Joey writes! She takes a subject that you or may not be aware of but that is definitely considered taboo too many and she makes a spicy, romantic, sweet tale that proves it is all about the love two people have for each other because after all you are reading a love story. I love that she deals with military, vets and disabilities and it never takes away from the romance and love story; it just enhances the story. I am a huge fan.

This was my first Joey W. Hill book, I'm beguiled.
This book expressed the deep love and loss a person can have when losing someone. Devastating to

to become alive again after loosing her husband and sub. Dale is a SEAL that has lost part of what
makes him a man. His career and independence. As their lives come together they both learn to flourish
    within each other.
