Editorial Reviews

VOYA
In this third collection of Unshelved comics, Barnes and Ambaum continue to chronicle the misadventures of the Mallville Public Library staff and patrons. The series regulars are here, including the apathetic teen librarian Dewey, the frazzled manager Mel, and devious teen patron Marv. The gang gets involved in a series of bizarre, yet familiar cringe-inducing scenarios that could only happen in a library, including the titular Library Mascot Cage Match, which is determined to be the best way to settle a copyright dispute with another library. Also included is the full-color graphic novella Empire County Strikes Back, the stirring tale of a small, under-funded library's struggle against an evil corporate bookmobile. Unshelved will be familiar to most librarians; likely they either receive it daily via e-mail, have seen the strips in CogNotes at American Library Association (ALA) conventions, or at the very least, have seen especially relevant excerpts posted on a co-worker's cubicle. This humor is aimed at librarians; however, civilians will find plenty to laugh at as well because much of the humor comes at the expense of rude, ignorant, or just plain oblivious people who can be found in all professions. Barnes's simple art, done in black and white with very little shading, creates a believable if cartoony universe for the characters to inhabit. Give this book to your teen regulars and watch them cackle in conspiratorial glee-or blush with shamed recognition.
