Overview

The ultimate action/adventure trilogy begins, with #1 bestselling author Gordon Korman plunging readers into the heart of the Titanic.

The Titanic is meant to be unsinkable, but as it begins its maiden voyage, there's plenty of danger waiting for four of its young passengers. Paddy is a stowaway, escaping a deadly past. Sophie's mother is delivered to the ship by police - after she and Sophie have been arrested. Juliana's father is an eccentric whose riches can barely hide his madness. And Alfie is hiding a secret that could get him kicked off the ship immediately.
The lives of these four passengers will be forever linked with the fate of Titanic. And the farther they get from shore, the more the danger looms. . . .

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
What do an orphaned pickpocket, the daughter of an earl, the daughter of a Suffragette, and a poor seaman's son have in common? They are all aboard the Titanic in 1912 as it makes its first and last transatlantic crossing. In Belfast, Ireland, fourteen year old pickpocket Paddy flees to the ship as he escapes the gangster who killed his friend Daniel and in desperation becomes a stowaway. Juliana Glamm is traveling to America with her thrill seeking father, the Earl of Glamford. Sophia and her mother have been expelled from London after the latest demonstration for women's votes. Searching for his father, Alfie lies about his age to become a steward. This unlikely quartet is brought together as they sail to America. This first book in a trilogy takes them through the first days of the voyage as they explore the fabulous ship and discover danger. Is Jack the Ripper aboard? How can they escape the gangster Kevin Gilhooley? This short, exciting read will entertain young readers who will want to read the rest of the trilogy. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Circumstances bring four youths from different backgrounds together on the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic in the first title in a trilogy by Gordon Korman (Scholastic, 2011). Paddy is a stowaway, on the run from gangsters in Belfast. Sophie is the beleaguered daughter of a prominent American suffragette. Alfie has lied about his age in order to secure a job as a steward on the same ship where his father works. Juliana is on a business trip with her father, an eccentric English aristocrat with a gambling problem. The lives of the four become embroiled in adventure and mystery as the great ship embarks on its ill-fated voyage across the Atlantic. Michael Page delivers a strong performance, deftly shifting between characters, and giving each a unique voice by altering accent, pacing, and tone. From Paddy's Irish brogue to Sophie's American accent to Juliana's aristocratic tone and Alfie's working class voice, Page brings the characters to life. Listeners will eagerly await the next installment of this fast-paced story.—Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL

    Not a great start

I love Gordon Korman and I've studied the Titanic disaster for years. In that respect it sounds like a good pairing but it wasn't. I haven't read any of Korman's trilogy series but if this is indicitave, I won't seek them out in the future. This isn't really the start of a trilogy but a third of one book. I hope this is simply to encourage young readers without a scary long looking book rather than a despicable ploy to milk their wallets. To the story: the characters are cliched, the setting doesn't add much and the use of the car in the cargo hold has been in books, movies and video games far too often. I'm surprised Jack and Rose didn't stumble across Paddy, with Frank Carlson following soon after to use the headlights. I'm tired of Titanic stories that make those silly Poseidon Adventure remakes look creative and original. Sadly, this book (or really the beginning third of a book) is trite with none of Korman's usual charm, wit and humor.

A very easy read. Targeted for the younger readers.

I started this novel while waiting for others that I had put on hold at the library. The length was right for what I wanted. It was very easy to read and to keep track of the charachters. I was not aware that it is a series. Jim
