A drunken earl mistakenly enters the wrong room at an inn and compromises a young woman running away from the unwanted sexual advances of her stepfather. The earl convinces himself that the lady set him up, but unhappily enters into a marriage to save her reputation and then callously abandons her on his estate. Even when the earl begins to realize that the lady might make a suitable countess, he continues to persist in thinking her a scheming slut and even considers that she may be behind the attempts being made on his life. I would have rated this story 4 stars has the hero not been so totally pigheaded and doubtful of his wife.
