Biography

Extensive and versatile, Elizabeth Lowell's résumé of titles (in almost every genre) is as long as the list of her various pen names. She's written science fiction, mystery and romance. She's also penned historical fiction and collaborated on a movie novelization. So prolific is Lowell that she and her husband, Evan Maxwell, have had to create a whole raft of pseudonyms for her books.

Her earliest work, from the 1970s, is science fiction and is written under her actual name, Ann Maxwell. The romances she and her husband began writing together in the early '90s are under the same name, because their publisher wanted a female author’s name on the cover. Their Southern California mystery series featuring the divorced lovers Fiddler and Fiora are written under A. E. Maxwell (Ann and Evan), while their joint novelization of the 1992 Val Kilmer movie Thunderheart is under the name Lowell Charters (his middle name and her maiden name.)

Her biggest solo success, the romance novels that have taken her repeatedly to The New York Times bestseller list, are credited to Elizabeth Lowell -- a combination of the couple’s middle names.

Lowell’s romances are noted for their sass and, of course, their sex. But her characterizations, particularly, draw high marks. "Elizabeth Lowell's talent is enormous," wrote The Romance Reader in its review of 1984's Forget Me Not. "She has made a well-deserved name for herself by crafting likable, plucky heroines and enigmatic but intelligent heroes." And, in 1996 the Chicago Tribune wrote, "The protagonist she has chosen for her hardcover debut, Winter Fire could give a Navy SEAL lessons in survival."

Lowell embarked on a popular series in 1997 with the publication of Amber Beach, which introduced readers to the Donovan family, titans in the menacing world of precious gemstones who must dodge murderers, thieves, and power-hungry governments to protect their business. Of the first in the series, Kirkus Reviews wrote, "A romance that offers all the sexual tension, adventure and squishy clichés that fans of the genre could possibly want."

When Lowell was getting started as sci-fi writer Ann Maxwell, she was writing on legal pads while caring for her two young children. Evan was a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, covering international crime. In the early 1980s, after he had already collaborated on three mystery novels with Lowell, Maxwell decided to quit daily journalism and write fiction full-time.

The couple has since become a cottage industry of genre fiction operating out of their Seattle-area home. They collaborate on some projects, go solo on others. Lowell has described a seven-day-a week work packed with deadlines, an organized effort that starts out with book outlines that typically take about a month to draft as well as character sketches. Then the writing begins.

"My fiction deals with problems of strength rather than problems of weakness," she told Contemporary Authors. There is no appeal or purpose for me in reading -- or writing -- fiction that portrays incessant, excruciating, and pointless pain in the lives of characters."

Good To Know

Readers are surprised to find out that the books Lowell writes with her husband are true collaborations. "In fact, a lot of people, once they know, say, 'Oh, I know who did this in the book, and I know who did this,' and they're almost invariably wrong," she told the Los Angeles Times.

Two of the most intriguing time periods for Lowell are medieval England and the post-Civil War period in the American West. "In both cases it was a time of expanded possibilities for individuals, regardless of birth or heritage, to create a better life and, ultimately, a better world, from chaos," she told Contemporary Authors.

Chapter One

Spring in the Reign of King Henry I Northern England

The sound of a war horn sliced through the day, announcing the coming of Blackthorne Keep′s new lord. As though summoned, a dark shape condensed out of the mist ... a knight in full armor riding a huge stallion. Horse and man seemed one, indivisible, fierce with the male power singing in their blood like a storm.

"They say he is a devil, m′lady the widow Eadith muttered.

"They say that of all Norman knights," Meg said to her handmaiden with desperate calm, " yet among them surely there must be men of Kind and generous hearts."

Eadith made a sound that could have been a throttled laugh.

"Nay, mistress." Tis fitting that your bridegroom wears chain mail and rides a savage destrier. There is whispering of war."

"There will be no war," Meg said firmly. "That is why I will wed--to end the bloodletting.

"Do not mislead yourself . War is more likely to be waged than a wedding," Eadith announced with savage satisfaction. Death to the Norman invaders!"

"Silence," Meg said softly. "I will hear no talk of war."

Eadith′s mouth thinned, but she spoke no more of war.Standing at a high window of the keep, shielded from view by a partly closed shutter Meg searched the land for the riding household that must have accompanied the warrior, who would soon become her husband. Nothing moved behind the war-horse but silver mist twisting above the fields. The horn had been sounded by someone hidden within the forest that lay beyond the keep′s cultivated land.

Horse and chain mail-dad knight loomed larger with every moment, riding openly up to the keep, fearing nothing. No retainers hurned behind the knight no squires appeared leading war-horses or pack animals burdened with the shmmg metal tools of war. Against all custom, Dominic le Sabre approached the Saxon keep with nothing but the war horn′s deep cry attending him.

"This one is truly the Devil wearing man′s flesh," Eadith said, crossing herself. I would never wed him.,,

"Quite true. ′Tis my hand to be given, not yours.,"

′May God save you," Eadith muttered. I tremble for you, my lady, since you have not the wit to tremble for yourself!"

I am the last of an ancient and proud line, Meg said in a husky voice. "What is a nameless Norman bastard to make a daughter of Glendruid tremble?"

Yet even as Meg spoke, fear washed coolly down her spine. The closer Dominic le Sabre rode, the more she feared her handmaiden was right.

"God be with you, m′lady, for ′tis certain tile Devil will be!"

As Eadith spoke, she crossed herself again.

With outward composure Meg watched the proud warrior ride closer This was the man who would claim her as bride, and with her, the vast domain that she would inherit upon the munment death of her father. That was the lure that had brought a famous Noman knight from Jerusalem to the northern marches of King Henry′s realm. Her father′s estates had always been the lure for the Scots lords whose families had asked Meg′s hand for their sons. But first William ll and then Henry I had refused to condone a marriage for Lady Margaret of Blackthorne. Until now.The knight on his war stallion approached closer, telling Meg that her future husband was unusual in more than that he rode alone. Like an outcast knight, he wears no lord′s colors, yet certainly he is favored by the English king. When he becomes my husband, he will control more land than any but the greatest of the king′s barons. Puzzled, Meg watched the Norman knight who had become a great English lord. He rode under no banner and wore no man′s emblem on his teardropshaped shield. His helm was fashioned of a strange, blackened metal, the same color as the war horse that bore him. The long cloak that mantled his mail--clad body and that of his horse was dark, rich, and swirled heavily with the stallion′s powerful movements.

Proud as Lucifer both of them. And as strong.

Meg watched the dark lord′s approach, willing herself to show no fear.

"He′s uncommon large," Eadith said.

Meg said nothing.

"Does he not appear fearsome to you?" the handmaiden asked.

    Couldn't put it down!

    This was my first book by Elizabeth Lowell. I was so awed by her writing style. The characters and scenes were described in a way that you could see in your minds eye exactly what it looked like. The action scenes were so precisely but not over written that I could literally hear in my mind the swords connecting with shields! This was an amazing series, I have read it over and over again, never tiring of the story, characters and the era! Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful!

    Wonderful tale of a time long past

    If you like a good story of knights and lords you can't go wrong with this book. Lowell colors a picture of the harsh realities that existed for common folk, lords, and those with special gifts. There are battles of the sward and the heart that are to be won.

    Untamed

    I highly recommend this book as a well written romance book. It's not predictable like most romance cliches. Dominic and Meg both share a love for falcons. Dominic is attracted to Meg the moment that he sees her. They are forced to get married, but something tests their relationship. Their relationship has a lot tension and chemistry building among them that is reflected throughout the book. It's about trust, faith, loyalty, and love. It's about how human beings can gravely affect one another.

    incredible!!!

    I read all 3 books and I was spellbound. Ms. Lowell is a fantastic writer. She takes us into a journey where you wish you didn't have to return. But, she needs to write a book about Eric.

    Could've Been So Much More

    Just finished reading this book. I started reading it because it was recommended as an historical novel of the romance brand. I enjoy those kinds of novels and I enjoy learning about the period history. However, this novel lacked in that area. The first few chapters were of knights and ladies and I found it intrigueing. But as the novel wore on it was more about the knight / hero of the novel trying to get into the pants of his wife / heroine from an arranged marriage. At points, it errupted into an erotic novel filled with elusive references to sex and body parts. I grew weary of the "little falcon" reference and the "sheathed sword" (or any other reference to sword as a sex tool) throughout. The plot was interesting enough what with knights and lords and ladies and one point of treachery towards the very end and under another author it could have been so much more than 300 pages of boring sexetaphs it spanned. I understand this novel is the first of a "medievel" series by this author. I doubt I'd be interested in any more dribble of this nature.

    not worth the read

    the author use to much flowery word on this book that will challenge your vocabulary skills and yet I feel that it is to amateurish because of the lack of content on the story. I keep waiting for the story to get better but instead it get stretch with none sense stuff and the ending was rush and predictable.

    I have all three books of Elizabeth Lowell's Medieval Series. They are exceptionally well-written. This series of books are the first romance novels I have ever read; however, they will not be the last. Wonderful introduction.

    Historical Fiction

    If you enjoy good historical fiction, then you will enjoy this one. Plot was a bit too predictable for me but overall writing style was enjoyable. Have read others by Hannah that i liked better. Still would recommend this one.
