Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
When you have a "Monkey on your Back" and are as "Busy as a Beaver" do not "Cry Wolf" or "Let the Cat out of the Bag" or even "Hold Your Horses," "Until the Cows Come Home" and you get it "Straight from the Horse's Mouth," by reading this delightful book of animal related idioms. A colorful and spirited book to encourage middle-grade readers to learn about, and create their own, animal-related idioms—phrases that mean something different than what you might think they mean. Two pages are devoted to nearly every idiom and include both photographs and cartoon-like drawings colorfully illustrating the idiom's meaning. For example, "Eat Like a Bird" shows young Alex picking at his food with a caption "Kids who don't eat a whole lot in one sitting might hear the expression, ?You eat like a bird'" with a facing illustration of a bluejay and a caption that reads "contrary to popular belief, birds eat a lot." The informative page goes on to state that the expression "eat like a bird" means to eat just a small amount—because birds are small—but they eat a lot for their size. A glossary including the word "idiom" as well as a list of websites for further reading and index are included at the book's end. Reviewer: Debra Lampert-Rudman
