Library Journal - Audio
In a far-future Europe, only relics of technology remain and dark magic dominates a pitiful and war-torn feudal world as a ruthless, damaged boy attempts domination of the scraps left behind. Lawrence's (King of Thorns) trilogy ender finds Jorg at 20, already king of seven kingdoms, ready to reembark on his quest for revenge and eager to take charge of all Europe. This is a complex tale, dependent on previous episodes. Parallel stories occupy present and past, with additional flashbacks in dreams and minor scenes with ancillary viewpoint characters. The story is violent, but not gratuitously so. James Clamp wends his way through the many twists and turns with an understated dramatic performance. The careful listener will be well rewarded. VERDICT Of particular interest to those waiting for another episode of George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire," this trilogy belongs in most fantasy collections. ["Fans of epic and military fantasy should enjoy this tale," read the review of the Ace: Berkley hc, LJ 8/13.]—Janet Martin, Southern Pines P.L., NC
