It’s time to choose sides. . . .

On the surface, Sorry-in-the-Vale is a sleepy little town. But Kami Glass knows the truth. Sorry-in-the-Vale is full of magic. In the old days, the Lynburn family ruled with fear, terrifying the people into submission by killing human sacrifices for blood and power. Now the Lynburns are back, and Rob Lynburn is gathering sorcerers so the town can return to the old ways.

But Rob and his followers aren’t the only sorcerers around. The town must make a decision: pay the blood sacrifice, or fight. For Kami, this means more than just choosing between good and evil. With her link to Jared Lynburn severed, she’s now free to love whomever she chooses. But who should that be?

VOYA - Laura Lehner
The second installment of The Lynburn Legacy continues the story of Kami Glass and her band of high school journalists who are trying to get to the bottom of the magical history of their town and to prevent an evil wizard from taking over. Rob Lynburn, father of Kami's love interest, Ash, would have the whole town fall under his spells and offer up a human sacrifice to fortify his power. Kami had previously been psychically joined to Ash's cousin, Jared, but the severing of that magical connection has left them both off-balance and confused about their feelings for each other. This series, which began with Unspoken (Random House, 2012), will be a hit with the right audience. Kami is a charming protagonist—full of vinegar and spice. The dialogue is humorous, the characters are attractive and smart, and the action moves along at a good pace. Fans of romantic fantasy will devour it, but those with more discriminating literary taste might find it wanting—school libraries would be better off spending their money elsewhere, but it will do well in the public library. Kirkus Reviews
Middle-book syndrome strikes hard in this nouveau-gothic paranormal sequel. Intrepid girl reporter Kami Glass and her allies expect power-hungry sorcerer Rob Lynburn to take revenge after his murderous schemes are thwarted. When a brilliantly creepy Halloween attack is followed by demands for a midwinter human sacrifice, they are left with only weeks to muster their defenses. It's a promising setup, but the story provides only perfunctory glimpses of intensive historical research, martial arts practice and magical training, devoting chapters instead to relationship angst: friendships tested by unrequited crushes and families riven by lies and divided loyalties. Kami in particular anguishes over both her romantic triangle with the near-identical Lynburn cousins and the magical link with her that both covet. Shifting viewpoints start plot threads that simply disappear, and while the snarky banter is as witty as ever, it sits oddly amid all the interpersonal melodrama and looming danger. The (mostly offstage) villains finally return in a bloody confrontation, with disastrous results only surpassed by the macabre slaughter the supposed good guys inflict on their own side. Everything leads to a gruesome cliffhanger contrived to leave readers desperate for the final volume. A hot mess of a book but weirdly compelling; buy where the first has eager fans.
