Overview

Their town of Ferryport Landing is populated with many Everafters. The Everafters are fairy-tale characters who escaped and use disguises along with a little magic to fit in with the humans in town. Only the sisters, descendants of the Brothers Grimm know the secrets of the Everafters and somehow the sisters are the town's sleuths who assist Sheriff Hamstead—who is actually one of the three little pigs—in coping with problems and criminal behavior. The village has more than its share of "Everafters," a group of fairy-tale characters who escaped persecution in Europe by fleeing to America over 200 years ago. Here, the sisters start attending the local elementary school where the principal just happens to be the Pied Piper of Hamelin and Snow White is a most beloved teacher. Almost instantly, one of their teachers is found dead in his classroom, tied to the ceiling in a spider web. While investigating his murder, the girls uncover a devious plot and get closer to discovering the whereabouts of their missing parents. Free-spirited Daphne is a perfect foil for her older, grumpier sister, Sabrina, whose understandable anger over the loss of her parents is the main theme of this novel. There are as many references to frightening aspects of today's world as there are nods to folklore and sometimes both appear in the same sentence. While this mixing of sensibilities proves that fairy tales can be as dark as reality, it also occasionally trivializes truly upsetting modern problems such as nuclear weapons and child labor. The story is fast paced and the main characters are sympathetic and appealing. In a second outing every bit as hilarious and scary as the first, Sabrina and Daphne, the two young descendants of Wilhelm Grimm, no sooner start school in Ferryport Landing than the murders of a teacher and the custodian catapult them into a new investigation. Well-populated by figures from their many-times-great grandpa's tales, plus the likes of Geppetto, Prince Charming and Puck-all of whom are magically confined to the small Hudson River town for their own protection, but don't much like it-the tale unfolds amid encounters with bullies, monsters and large quantities of slime. It involves wild rides through the air and other threats to life and limb, and culminates in a subterranean face-off with Rumpelstiltskin, a goblin with a creepy fondness for children who has partnered with the Pied Piper for an escape attempt. Buckley halts the action a little too often to fill in the back story, and his climax is awkwardly staged-but all of his characters glow with interesting nuances, as they did in the first episode, and he closes this one on a genuinely disturbing cliffhanger. Definitely not bedtime reading. Occasional technically finished illustrations. (Fantasy. 12-14)

    Truly unusual!

    In her second adventure, Sabrina is spending all her spare time trying to find a way to get her missing parents back and spending all her school time trying to figure out what is going on at Ferryport Landing
    Elementary. When her classroom is covered in a giant spiderweb and there's a red handprint on the chalkboard, Sabrina knows that she, her
    little sister Daphne, Granny Relda, and various Everafters are in for
    another rollicking, wild, crazy escapade, but even she doesn't know how
    rollicking and wild and crazy and surprising it's going to be! Clues are
    turning up here, there, and everywhere, but when the Sisters Grimm finally piece them all together, the answers are buried deep-
    deep underground, that is!

    Awesome Book

    This was the 1st of the books I read, it was absoulty awesome. Once I started I couldn't put it down. Once I saw that it was to be continued, I got the next one right away.

    From what I believe is the best book in the series!

    Micheal Buckley is adorded not by only me but hopefully many other people as well. The way he puts you in movie theatre mode is the most fun part of the book!:) I am extremley excited for the last book to come out soon in 2012!

    Laugh out loud moments, a great read

    Very few books have managed to make me laugh. And I mean burst out laughing until your cry or until your guts hurt laugh. sure, I get a chuckle here and there from some books I've read in the past, but this one really got to me. I couldn't stop laughing at some parts (the dodgeball part really did it in for me) and tears started coming down and my stomach hurt. It came to the point where I was told to keep quiet because I couldn't stop laughing so much. I can't remember a time where I enjoyed a book so much like this one.

    The plot of this book was much better than the first one. There's more mystery involved and with Puck, the humor is increased ten fold. Sabrina is still having a hard time adjusting and her rude behavior is still there, but whatever Puck does to her to upset her is justified in my opinion. I still find her disagreeable but I don't dislike her as much as I did in the first book. Grandma and Daphne are still loveable as ever. The plot is certainly darker than the first one, and I like it. Although the culprit may have already been guessed, the plot still continues to be attention grabbing with some action, comedy, and magic scenes which is sure to keep the reader going.

    The illustrations also add a nice visual stimuli for the reader, and I thought they were well done. The last drawing was a little creepy and gave me a bit of a chill but the way the ending was written, it certainly got me curious and I'm definitely going to continue reading this series. There is still the unanswered question regarding Daphne and Sabrina's parents which I think is the main problem they're trying to solve while other mysteries pop up in their way.

    An extremely fun read, with lots of laughs, a lot of fun magic and mystery. This book is definitely recommended for all ages who love fairy tales and don't mind a little twist to them. (Think Shrek). I wonder if others have laughed as much as I did while reading the dodgeball game scene.

    The story opens not too far after the first book. Sabrina (age 11) and her sister Daphne (I think age 7) have adjusted to life with their unusual grandmother in Ferryport Landing. When social services finally catch up with Granny, the children find themsevles enrolled in school at Ferryport Landing. That goes for Puck, nemesis to Sabrina and character of Twelfth Night, who features a larger role in this story as he becomes closer (in a literal sense) to the Grimm family.

    Sabrina is already angry enough and preoccupied enough by her missing parents and, according to her, her own completely unaided efforts in trying to find them without dealing with school. Sabrina, in fact, wants nothing to do with school or the creepy Everafters who are teaching there. Sabrina's mistrust of the institution is confirmed when a teacher and the school's janitor turn up murdered under very strange circumstances. However, in order to investigate with her grandmother and Daphne, Sabrina is forced to go along with the whole student thing for a bit longer.

    If the snark wasn't indication enough, let me point out that I am not a great fan of the Sisters Grimm novels. The more I search online, the more I seem to be in the minority. Parents love them, School Library Journal loves them, and I have yet to find a child reader who doesn't love them. But I just don't.

    The reality of these books compared to the potential they books had before I read them falls painfully short. Buckley has several excellent side characters (Mr. Canis and Ferryport Landing's Mayor are my two personal favorite characters out of either book) with excellent side stories, but that isn't enough. While certain details are fleshed out, the main characters remain flat. Daphne is adorable and probably would have done better with more page-time. Puck, while entertaing is also often annoying (something Sabrina and I do agree on). The characters also never communicate. Granny, while awesome, never really knows what is going on with Sabrina. Although that doesn't matter much since Sabrina will clearly never listen to anyone about anything. Ever.

    Which brings me to Sabrina, our main character. I acknowledge that Sabrina is dealing with some heavy stuff, but I hate how angry she is. Buckley makes such a point of her anger (in the first and second books) that this one trait completely absorbs Sabrina's whole personality. All I see is an irrationally angry eleven-year-old. This unattractive trait is further emphasized in The Unusual Suspects. As a result, when it becomes apparent that an Everafter (one of the fairy tale creatures that populate Ferryport Landing) is responsible for the school killings, Sabrina seems bent on blaming all of the Everafters for the actions of one. No matter how nice any of them are to her. I don't know about anyone else, but that sounds a lot like bigotry to me.

    Even if I did like Sabrina, the tone of this novel was as erratic as that of the first novel. Buckley takes on a lot in these volumes, but not in a cohesive way. The murder scenes are described with accurate guts and gore. Meanwhile Sabrina's emotions are flattened to one word: anger. This creates an unbalanced narrative that sometimes feels like the children's novel it is and sometimes feels much darker. In my view, the writing isn't targeting a consistent audience.

    Readers will have to judge for themselves, but after finishing this novel I have decided to wash my hands of the series
