Children's Literature - Cynthia Levinson
The subtitle of this 36-page volume, "The Remarkable... Revealed," aptly summarizes the multiple, paragraph-long anecdotes. In no discernible order, entries include tales of a village in Germany that was over-run by pig manure when a storage tank burst, a man who regularly wrestles octopuses, an elderly Inuit woman who ingested and retained buckshot from wild ducks hunters had shot, a Chinese man who plans to open a museum with 800,000 copies of the 6,000 different newspapers he's collected, and many more. Interspersed among these staccato stories are full pages devoted to slightly longer exposes about an artist who concocts gruesome figures from fish and animal skins wrapped around steel and plastic skeletons, an interview with a competitive eater, oddly addressed envelopes that have found their way to the Ripley offices, an artist who paints with dust, and a spread on odd items, such as nails and scissors, that reside in people. Many entries are accompanied by photographs. Referring to some of them as "weird legends and mysterious myths," a brief introduction suggests that some might not be entirely true. Readers will love to ooh, aah, and gag. The book ends with a table of contents. Reviewer: Cynthia Levinson
