Unwrapped

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
The title of Gloria Estefan's first album in three years says it all. Unwrapped is a calculated attempt by the 46-year-old singer to bring the refined profile she has in the Spanish-language world to an English audience that primarily identifies her with party jams. And it works, thanks to Estefan's willingness to think seriously and take risks. Writing the majority of songs herself, she celebrates her new role in life -- her daughter Emily is now six -- and in her art. Unwrapped, more than any other Estefan record, brings her bilingual personality into one nuanced whole. The music is mature, somewhat jazzy, with Latin touches that don't scream "Conga!" -- Andean panpipes, for example -- and surprising textures ...

The music is mature, somewhat jazzy, with Latin touches that don't scream "Conga!" -- Andean panpipes, for example -- and surprising textures from organ and pedal steel guitar. Two very high-profile fans join Gloria on this one. Stevie Wonder lends vocals and harmonica to "Into You" while Pretender Chrissie Hynde joins Estefan on "One Name." But it's Estefan's personality that shines through this warm, thoughtful record, at long last.

She's back to doing her own music again!!!

Unwrapped is yet another amazing Gloria album, pure and simple. As many critics are saying, the sound is indeed a bit more mature than we're use to, but it works perfectly! This album is infused with all sorts of different rhythms and instruments which add depth and quality to Gloria's music. There are ballads, latin-flavored songs, up-tempo pieces, and even a little bit of reggae; but the highlight of this CD, I believe, is "I Wish You". It reminds me of "I See Your Smile" but very contemporary and incredibly arranged. I'm really glad she is once again writing her own music, I don't think anyone can write for Gloria quite like herself. Get this CD!

Buy this album! You'll be sorry if you don't...

"Unwrapped" is not for another three weeks, but as being part of Gloria's online mailing list, this is proven to be her best album yet. Her first English-language album in FIVE years, and by far, her most personal, enthralling, and personal yet. Gloria wrote all the lyrics to the album and on some of the songs, there is a bit of a mix of No Doubt and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Overall, the musicanship and songwriting is absolutely magnificent. Just ask Universal Music Publishing, who are now the publishers of Gloria's music. Please read this fantastic review on "Unwrapped." It gives some great, detailed information about the songs on this soon-to-be classic album! This is a must! ****************************************** GLORIA ESTEFAN: UNWRAPPED & UNPLUGGED There are singers who can captivate a community. There are vocalists whose sound can penetrate deeply into your soul. There are entertainers who can mesmerize, enlighten and entertain, all in one breath. Gloria Estefan who does it all, effortlessly. Gloria Estefan is a true original. With nearly thirty years in the music industry to her credit, the woman who broke down musical barriers and set a higher standard for all genres of music has returned with a penultimate album that continues her artistic mission statement. “As an artist, I feel like my mission is to entertain. And more importantly, to give people a way to say things,” says Gloria. Songs have always done that for me—given me a way to express myself. There are so many people who have told me that my music helped them through a rough time in their life. What can be better than that? I just have to continue to grow so that I can continue to make music that inspires my listeners.” The result is an amazing piece of work from a gifted singer/songwriter and producer. The entire CD was recorded live, giving the album a raw, uncensored vibe that is pure and intense. All of the musicians and vocalists collaborated together, recording their takes simultaneously, which gives Unwrapped a powerful cohesiveness that brings musical excellence from the intro to the finale. For the first time, Gloria flexes her muscles as a producer. Along with her husband and long time producer Emilio Estefan, Gloria helmed the boards with the assistance of Sebastian Krys, who has worked on her projects for many years. “Sebastian is one of our prime producers and an incredible, Grammy-winning engineer,” says Gloria. “And he ended up becoming one of the primary writers on this album.” In addition to branching out in terms of production, Gloria wanted to invite musicians that would give Unwrapped a distinct sound. The one and only Stevie Wonder was at the top of Gloria’s wish list and Stevie needed no convincing. His amazing harmonica solo and unmistakable sultry voice appear on the sexy and soulful “Into You.” “I love and adore Stevie Wonder and have worked with him on many occasions,” says Gloria. “But this is the first time we’ve recorded together. He has been a major influence on me as a writer, as a musician and as a singer. I gave him a call and he said, ‘Gloria, we’re family, I’m there.’ He not only threw down an incredible harmonica solo but he also sang on it and I will forever be thankful.” Musicians who are not yet household names also earned pride of place on Unwrapped. Manu Keche, a drummer from The Ivory Coast who has played with Sting and Peter Gabriel, performs on several tracks. “His sound combines jazz, rock and African rhythms seamlessly,” says Gloria. “It was hard for me to concentrate sometimes just watching him.” Gloria says she wanted the album to be like a photo album, filled with snapshots of her life and the journey from there to here. Unwrapped is a musical journey through one woman’s life. And it is as inspirati

    Gloria is Back!

With UNWRAPPED, Gloria Estefan is back on the scene after 5 long years. This album is the strongest of her career - beautiful instrumentation and lyrics - including duets with Chrissie Hynde ("One Name") and Stevie Wonder ("Into You"). I definately recommend this album to Gloria fans and non-fans alike. This will surely change your opinion of popular music!
