Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This slim little book has seven double-page spreads. Each spread has a small blue and green box that pops up from the gutter when the page is opened and from which bugs pop out in every direction. Bugs go up and down, on and off, and in and out as they jump around and through the boxes. On one page the reader has to peer through a hole in the box to find one of the bugs. On the last page all of the bugs reappear, but the reader still has to look inside to see the shy one. You can examine all the boxes to see how the bugs are designed to jump about. The bugs and the boxes all appear simpler than they really are but this is the hallmark of a David Carter movable book. Not all pop-up books are as revealing of their engineering. For those who would like to try making their own pop-ups, this is a good book to study. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
