Children's Literature - Children's Literature
The neon orange end papers set the tone for this illustrated poem about a child's visit to the park. "Sun peeks out. We all shout. Up the ladder, down the slide, so much fun to play outside." The children meet friends and together explore all the different things you can do at the playground. The illustrations are fun, playfully stylized and brightly colored to reflect the mood of a lighthearted, summer day in the park.
School Library Journal
PreSA group of children gather together for a joyful day at the park. The story line is simple but the poetic text and action-filled illustrations work together to paint a complete picture. The words, a few on each page, seem at first to be bumping along randomly, but there's a certain pattern that includes lines that don't rhyme, a short rhymed couplet, and a refrain, "Up the ladder, down the slide, so much fun to play outside." The bright, bordered gouache paintings emphasize the sharing, the liveliness, and the friendship of these playmates; they do not clearly delineate but only suggest that the children may be of different ages and races. Changes in perspective and hot shades of turquoise, pink, and lime keep the pictures bouncing. A cheerful red bird enters into the activities and a smiling sun watches over the scene. A blue blanket is used for sharing, playing, and picnicking, and is folded up when the day is over. Enthusiastic listeners will want to open the blanket up and start all over again.Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME
Kirkus Reviews
A rhyming romp follows a group of kids from dawn until dusk, as they play in the park. Slides, swings, and a picnic on a big blue blanket fill up the day under a smiling sun: "Up the ladder, down the slide, so much fun to play outside!" When all the food is gone, and the daylight fades away, it's time to blow kisses and say goodbye. Everitt's breezy style of illustration, filled with lively pinks, yellows and greens is friendly, but this is less a story and more a blueprint for a fun day outside. Most children will read it once, pack a picnic, and go. (Picture book. 6-8)
