Overview

An all-on-their-own journey for the youngsters.

What is better than having a friend? And what's better for friends than a shared adventure? Dragon, Chicken, Rabbit, and Cat—the foursome of the author's To the Island—meet as ever to spend the day together. But it's a gray, wet day. "Up the mountain?/In the rain?/We can always go back home again." Encouraged by one another's company, they set off regardless of weather. And by the time they approach the summit ("The top is near,/the trees are fewer./Magically the sky is bluer!") their day has turned out to be a fine one. An upward struggle yields some splendid views: first the sun, finally the moon as they near home—where all the best adventures end. The language is utterly simple, the lively watercolors warm with affection.

Cat, Rabbit, Chicken, and Dragon go for a rainy romp up the mountain, splashing in puddles until the moon beckons them back home.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Why should rain put a damper on fun? Four animal friends--Dragon, Cat, Chicken and Rabbit--grab their boots and umbrellas and head up the mountain. Along the way are splashes and pratfalls, but the intrepid explorers are rewarded at the top with sunny skies, a rainbow and even blackberries to nibble. As the sun gives way to the moon, the friends descend to the cozy homes that await them. This adventure tale may prove too mild for children at the upper end of the target audience, but their younger counterparts should be captivated by Agell's (To the Island) economical, crisp rhymes ("Red rain boots and muddy feet/ Dancing wetly down the street") and sprightly, tightly framed drawings rendered in nursery room colors. A little chicken, a cat, a dragon, and a rabbit decide to trek up a mountain in the rain. Dressed in raincoats, red rubber boots, and carrying two umbrellas, the four friends encounter cold, hunger, splashy tumbles, wind and rain. Their refrain is, "We can always go back home again." Finally, they reach the top and descend as the moon rises on the horizon. Written in rhyming text, not all the verse flows smoothly, making it awkward to read out loud. At times, the verse stumbles flat in an attempt to complete the rhymes. Added to this, the illustrations look hurriedly completed and make this a weak offering. 2000, DK Publishing, Ages 3 to 5, $14.95. Reviewer: Sally J. K. Davies

PreS-The fun-loving pals who starred in Agell's To the Island (DK Ink, 1998) are back in another rhyming adventure. This time, Cat, Rabbit, Chicken, and Dragon set out one rainy morning. Their jaunt takes them up a mountain and through some woods to an alpine meadow and then back home as the moon rises and the sky grows dark. That is all that really happens, but the rhyme is so jolly, and the ink, watercolor, and pastel illustrations are so zesty that no one will care. Preschoolers will feel like they have picked the blueberries and slapped the mosquitoes along with the hiking quartet. Agell's style is calculatedly childlike and suitable for storyhours or lap-sitting enjoyment.-Sue Sherif, Fairbanks North Star Borough Public Library, AK Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
