Overview

The historical detective who uncovered the lives of Uppity Women in ancient, medieval, and Shakespearean times now presents a survey of women with guts, great-heartedness, and grim determination from the 1500s to the 1800s. The latest installment in the best-selling Uppity Women series follows fearless females as they brave new worlds, pioneer the wilderness on three continents, and fight slavery and injustice.

Meet: Jeanne Baret, who circumnavigated the globe on Bougainville's botany expedition disguised as a boy. Lydia Darragh, a Philadelphia seamstress who spied on British war councils and passed the information to American patriots sewn inside buttons on her son's coat. Mary Montagu, who brought smallpox vaccination to England. Biddy Mason, a slave who won her freedom in California, bought real estate in Los Angeles, built up a fortune, and founded the area's first black church. Mary Read and Anne Bonney, a pirate team who topped the marine "Most Wanted" list for three years. Sacagawea, who at sixteen was interpreter, guide, negotiator, and food forager for Lewis and Clark on their trek from the plains to the Pacific, all while caring for a newborn infant and maintaining her place as the sole female alongside 33 men.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
There are more than enough feisty women on this side of the Atlantic to fill an entire book, decided Vicki Le n (Uppity Women of the Renaissance, etc.), so she did. The result is Uppity Women of the New World, a hilarious yet sobering glance at 200 women in North and South America and Australia who took their destinies into their own hands. Some are famous, but most are not, like enterprising Mary Salmon, who in 1754 wasted no time picking up where her late husband left off as a Boston blacksmith and continued, as advertised, to shod gentlemen's horses "with fidelity and dispatch." 5-city author tour.
