Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Perhaps providing more amusement for urban parents than their progeny, Urban Babies Wear Black by Michelle Sinclair Colman, illus. by Nathalie Dion, ticks off the quotidian rituals prevalent among citydwellers. "Urban babies wear black" shows a toddler in a black jumpsuit pulling a Dachshund on wheels through a chic shop with polka-dot wallpaper. "Urban babies do yoga" depicts youngsters mimicking Mom's moves on the yoga mat while reaching for the pacifier hanging from her neck. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Urban life is, of course, different from rural areas and suburbia. The babies in this board book are very sophisticated (dressed in black), which I guess is the message that is meant to come across. They have opportunities to go to art galleries, to operas, and to drink latte while they read and dine in fine restaurants (although that is probably unlikely). This baby rides in a taxi, since many urban dwellers do not own cars. I would not be surprised to see follow-up books featuring babies in settings other than urban, but I am not sure that the message is all that positive and may be more like stereotyping. 2005, Ten Speed Press, Ages 1 to 3.

    Hilarious.

I was shopping with a pregnant friend when we came across this book. We couldn't stop cracking up as we flipped through the pages. It is definately a read that the modern mom will get a kick out of.

    Great gift for chic friends!

I found this book at the library and loved not only the concept, but the illustrations as well. The various titles offered by this author are fabulous and I cannot wait to give them to friends and family as gifts for soon-to-be/new parents.
