Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Sam Chang, MD(Vanderbilt University School of Medicine)Description: This fifth edition paperback examines the current literature on urinary tract infection detection, prevention, and management and attempts to synthesize this information in a concise fashion.
Purpose: The reader can independently read each of the 12 chapters, which are individually referenced. After an initial overview, the author examines the process of diagnosing infection and then covers aspects of pediatric and adult infections. The work then examines the pathogenesis, treatment, and management of infections.
Audience: The author provides historical and current perspectives of the literature for physicians and healthcare providers in all disciplines.
Features: Several helpful features allow quick referencing and facilitate review. Each chapter begins with a short overview and an outline of the chapter. Throughout the book, concise "Key Points About ... " tables effectively cover salient features of certain principles, and at the conclusion of different sections within each chapter, summary tables succinctly highlight important concepts. Clear diagrams describe techniques in an easy-to-follow fashion. Although not numerous, black-and-white radiographs depict certain significant urologic conditions such as reflux.
Assessment: The author presents a well-balanced, well-referenced work that provides an excellent foundation of knowledge that just as importantly can be easily accessed and understood. The author does not hesitate to state that unanswered questions remain, but he does give his supported opinion and interpretation of the literature on multiple topics. In addition, he successfully provides this wealth of information for those in clinical or basic science and for those in training as either physicians or healthcare personnel, who would benefit greatly in reviewing this book.
