Overview

Satellite images from outer space show us an astronaut's view of the world below. The colorful pictures let us explore what we see in maps of the United States, only the details are real. Big lakes and rivers, mountains and coasts, cities, deserts and forests all show up clearly in these images taken from space.

USA From Space reveals some of the most striking features of the American landscape. Using techniques that clearly delineate land forms and land uses (farms in Montana, bridges in Manhattan, waterways of the Florida Everglades), these images make geography come alive.

Each of 20 sites is portrayed in a striking full color image, accompanied by thoughtful text that describes the natural features in the picture. An accompanying photograph taken at ground level enhances each view from space: the rising space shuttle in Florida, an erupting volcano in Hawaii, earthquake damage in California. A locator map helps the reader pinpoint the area being shown, and the useful introduction explains how the images were created.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Beginning with the western-most state of Hawaii and continuing east to Florida, the author presents twenty satellite views of specific regions of the United States. Each picture is accompanied by an explanatory text. A red dot locates the area on a partial map of the U.S., but a map of the entire United States would have provided more context. Major cities such as San Francisco, New York and Washington, D.C. are included as well as environmentally significant areas such as the Everglades and the Chesapeake Bay. The reader is required to have some knowledge of map reading. That said, however, this is still a fun way to pique a child's interest in geography.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6--This compact suite of false- or enhanced-color satellite photographs takes viewers from Alaska's Katmai National Park to Florida with stopovers above Mount St. Helens, the Grand Canyon, New Orleans, St. Louis (before and during the flood of 1993), New York City, and other familiar locales. After an opening explanation of how and why satellite photos are taken, Fallen matches each of 20 overhead views with several paragraphs of description, plus another photo taken at ground level--the latter to show detail that is sometimes, but not always, visible from orbit. Though less detailed and systematic than Patricia Lauber's Seeing Earth from Space (Orchard, 1990), this book provides a quick visual summary of North American landforms as seen from beyond the atmosphere. It will enthrall those readers of any age who habitually leave nose prints on airliner windows.--John Peters, New York Public Library
