Overview

New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller

"You can have the finest moves in the talent contest, you can boast a trophy speed-dial list on your iPhone, you can possess the single-mindedness of Paul Revere and be as self-assured as Muhammad Ali . . . and you still won't nail the job unless you know how to mold and merchandise your personal pitch. If this is true when times are booming-and it is-you can only imagine how true it is in times like these."

Harvey Mackay, Fortune magazine's "Mr. Make- Things-Happen," has written five New York Times bestsellers, including one of the most popular business books of all time-Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive. Now he returns with the ultimate book on how to get, and keep, a job you truly love whether you're twenty-one, fifty-one, or seventy-one.

The average person will have at least three career changes and ten different jobs by age thirty-eight. In this era of downsizing and outsourcing, you can never be sure your job will still exist in five years- or five weeks. So you'd better think of your career as a perpetual job search. That demands a passion for lifetime learning and the skills for relentless and effective networking.

Mackay shows you how to be at your best when things are at their worst. His hard-hitting topics include:

- beating rejection before it beats you
- warning signals that you might be losing your job
- acing interviews
- negotiating the job you want not the job they offer
- taking advantage of the way bosses make hiring decisions
- blending the latest contact tools with old-fashioned face-to-face networking

Uplifting, amusing, and jam-packed with proven tips, Use Your Head to Get Your Foot in the Door will guide you through the toughest job market in decades. It's also the definitive A-to-Z career resource for the rest of your life.

    Outstanding

Great read, Harvey, this is one of the greatest of all time, I enjoyed reading his personal stories and interviews, his book is a solid advice for the human resources professionals too. An advice that Harvey give would be using http://www.Hounddotcom . The site has jobs only from employer websites and far more jobs than you will find on other job boards.

    Valuable information easy to digest.

I really enjoyed reading the book. I am fan of Harvey Mackay's books. I found that the textbook can be really useful also for human resources professionals. The information provided is really valuable. Also the way the book is structured (small chapters)give the opportunity to the reader to also organize the information provided in his mind.I would definitely recommend this book (as all Harvey Mackay's books) to all. I gained a lot of knowledge reading it. I would recommend to read for a second and third time. I would also recomend (personally it helped a lot) Hound to look for jobs. I really liked using it because it has jobs only from employer websites and far more jobs than you will find on other job boards. So Harvey Mackay you did it again! Great job.

Once again, Harvey Mackay provides guidance, information and solid strategies for people living and working in today's challenging times.

This book is loaded with data for any job seeker. It teaches people to realize they must always be job seekers watching out for their professional life. The data can be applied to any sector of the economy.

Being unemployed, downsized, right-sized, etc., is not a failure, it is a fact of life. Harvey Mackay's book guides the reader to understand this fact of life does not indicate they are a failure. The work world has changed and each person must change with it.

Through the use of personal stories and interviews with people, Harvey Mackay's book provides solid advice for the reader. The chapters are very short -- only a few pages -- which allows the reader to have bite sized portions of information.

This book should not only be read but it should be "used". "Used" means to make notes in the margins, use a highlighter, fold down corners of a page, add Post - It notes, and similar ways of tracking info you can turn back to later. Consider this to be not just a book. It is a Work Book!

Thanks to Harvey Mackay for sharing all this information!

    Smart Man. Great Stuff.

I had trouble rating this book and here's why:

    1. The entire book is filled with great info. As with other Harvey Mackay books, it's terrific street/office-smarts, well written, and easy to apply. If you've never read Mackay's work, you will gain huge amounts of valuable insight.
    2. The vast majority of this book has been written before - by Mackay. If you're a fan and "student" of Mackay (I have been for a long time), you've either heard him discuss some of the content in interviews or have read most of this in his columns, submitted articles in other publications or websites, and/or other books. I've created my own Harvey Mackay notebook. I already had most of this text.
    3. A good aspect of the book is that it touches on career stages other than the job hunt, namely advice on how to help keep your old job and how to advance your career. This is great, but it may catch an impatient reader off guard if they think this book will start with and focus on job hunting.

And there you have the dilemma as to how to rate this. Great stuff. If you haven't followed this business genius, you will gain a lot of knowledge and how to apply it. Most of what he lays out can be well used in marketing and sales also (thus, you have part of the "reprinted" work), not just job hunting. But... If you have followed him, you've read the majority of this before.

The Indispensible Field Manual for Anyone Who Works for a Paycheck

Admittedly, I was a Harvey Mackay fan when I went to the Minneapolis Barnes & Noble to buy this book.

I have read all of the items in the Mackay oeuvre - which is considerable - and have been known to press the bounds of polite conversation in urging others to read one or another of Harvey's titles.

The books and cassettes are transformational.

A short forty word summary of Harvey Mackay's catalogue of books, articles, tapes, videos and "tweets" can be found in the epilogue of his latest book. In classic Mackay style, refurbishing a famous quote from Andrew Carnegie, Harvey declares: "You could take my money from me, my home from me, my factories . whatever . but leave my good name, my reputation, and my network.. And I will be back where I was in two years."

The Mackay genre is a set of road maps for building one's good name, reputation and professional network. It is jammed with strategies, every day tactics and healthy food for thought - all delivered in a home-spun style that is accessible to just about every reader. These road maps will lead you to unimagined heights in good times and help you to chart a swift return when - as happens to every one of us, sooner or later - disaster strikes.

Ever au courant, Mackay's newest title is a field manual for Americans who are suffering in this era of economic calamity and collapse. It has valuable suggestions and take-aways for those who have a job, and for those who don't.

As Mackay explains in the opening pages of what turns out to be an unbelievably useful volume, this is the book that his wife of nearly fifty years, Carol Ann, urged him to write. No doubt a lot of lives will be changed for the better because of that prompting.

This book is worth buying for yourself, for a loved who is looking for work or anyone who relies on a paycheck.

    Shark Attacks Jobs

I have been reading Harvey Mackay's books for the past 22 years and they keep on making my life and my career better. I started out with Swim With The Sharks to learn how to survive and thrive in the business world. At times when I was looking for a job, his networking book Dig Your Well Before Your Thirsty showed me how to make relationships with heart.

Now, this new book is great for people that are looking for a job or know that they want to keep improving at their career.

You can't get better without a coach or someone to share their secrets and tips from their experience. Harvey shares all his job secrets and all the tools that he uses to be successful. Plus, he guarantees that if you buy this book and don't find a job he'll refund your money. It's filled with good ideas and GREAT cartoons.
