Overview

This is a guide to Korean language usage for students who have already acquired the basics of the language and wish to extend their knowledge and organise accumulated bits of information into a comprehensive picture. It is designed to promote the fluency and accuracy vital to effective communication, provides excellent coverage of proverbs, idioms, and sound symbolism, is tailored to the needs of the English-speaking user, and will be invaluable to anyone requiring up-to-date guidance on points of grammar and vocabulary. Unlike conventional grammars, it highlights those areas of vocabulary and grammar which cause most difficulty to English speakers. Special attention is given throughout the book to the appropriateness of different language styles in various situational contexts. Clear, readable, and easy to consult, it is essential for all those who wish to take their Korean beyond the beginner's level.

practical intermediate & advanced grammar guide

This is a grammar guide for learners at both intermediate and advanced stages. The stated minimum pre-requisite is basic Korean but I recommend that you do some intermediate material beforehand. I think you will understand more and gain more from the material if you do that. The book assumes you know quite alot about Korean already. Personally I used the intermediate-level 'Korean Grammar for International Learners New Edition' by Ho Bin Ihm. The book aims to explain the socially-correct usage of grammar, especially the grammar and vocabulary that learners often have problems with. So it is quite unique among grammar books as most tend to focus on academic or linguistic usage rather than colloquial. The explanations in 'Using Korean' are clear, but the most striking thing about the book is the large number of examples given: the authors try to cover all the angles of a grammatical problem. They even cover common proverbs and idioms in the book, something most textbooks completely ignore. The amount of detail they give is very impressive. You can use this book for reference, but looking things up in the book can be tricky because the authors use linguistic terms, and I tend to ignore such terms when I come across them in my textbooks. I think the book is best used not as reference but as a semi-textbook to study through and take notes from.
